Thanks a lot. I downloaded the free Google Keyboard from PlayStore and went into settings. Now the Google Keyboard item appears, and by clicking the icon on the right, the selectable options appeared. I selected Auto Correct and clicked on 'Off', and now it lets my type 'mit' in an email without changing it to 'MIT'.

To anyone still having this issue on Windows 10 (I am using an HP Spectre). 

 

Settings > Devices > Typing (left hand nav bar) > turn off "autocorrect misspelled words" 

 

That was easily the most annoying 30 minutes I have spent this week.
