I recently aquired a Z400 workstation and have run into a few problems regarding the processor/HSF upgrade.
The workstation had a Xeon W3503 that I upgraded to a W3570. I immediately received an alerting from the BIOS that the cooling solution wasn't sufficient (517 - Low Power CPU Heatsink(s) detected for High Power CPU(s).
Okay, not a big deal. I'll purchase a high power HSF combo for the Z400 (part number 658001-001). I get the HSF in the mail today, and the mounts that hold it to the motherboard do not line up at all. I'm confused because all of the compatible Xeon processors for the Z400's are LGA1366.

The 658001-001 heatsink is for the E3-1290 CPU, which is a FCLGA 1155 CPU used on the Z2xx series workstations. This heatsink will not work with the LGA1366 CPUs on the Z400, nor fit on the motherboard, as you unfortunately discovered.

The Z400 has a mainstream CPU heatsink, for <= 95W processors, and a performance CPU heatsink for > 95W processors. The performance CPU heatsink is a 538042-001. It can be ordered from the HP Parts Store, here:
The 538042-001 is a performance Z400 heatsink spare parts 'assembly", becayse it includes the 463981-001 heatsink, plus an alcohol pad and some paperwork and maybe the box. These items together make an 'assembly' with a higher part number. This is the same as ordering a replacement motherboard - it is part of a spares package, with a different assembly number.
The 538042-001 assembly includes the 463981-001 performance heatsink.
I think you bought the wrong heatsink. Does this answer your question?
