XW6400, XW8400, and XW8600 and 8GB FB DIMMS

Hi,

I'm looking to pick up a XW6400, XW8400 or XW8600 on Ebay.  I have quite a few 8GB Fully Buffered  DDR2 PC5300 dimms.  The quickspecs are somewhat vague about how 8GB DIMMS are supported (according to the quickspecs seems only as 128GB on the XW8600).  I've found other documents that say 8GB DIMM support will be avialable in the future, however the quickspecs do not show any 8GB DIMM configurations.

I'm wondering if the following are supported:

xw6400 32GB (4 x 8GB DIMM)

xw8400 64GB (8 x 8GB DIMM)

xw8600 64GB (8 x 8GB DIMM)

Would rather not have to deal with finding the riser card.  I also see mention of 120W CPUs and needing dual CPUs.  I'm hoping that someone has some experience with 8GB DIMMS.  Thanks!

Re: XW6400, XW8400, and XW8600 and 8GB FB DIMMS

We are also wondering about the 8GB dimms in the xw8600 as we are about to do a memory upgrade.

If anyone can confirm that those work on the xw8600, we would also be very grateful! The Tech Manual says that 8GB DIMMs are supported, but then has a note saying that 8GB DDR2-667 are NOT supported on the system board...

Thanks,

José

Hello,

xw6400:

xw6400 does not support 32GB of memory. Max it supports is 16GB and it has 4 slots which means max per slot is 4GB. Max possible combination is (4 x 4GB DIMM) Click here for xw6400 specs!!

xw8400:

xw8400 supports a max of 32GB only. It has 8 slots (if you add a memory riser board then the total slots would be 16). Max per slot is 4GB (without the riser board) and 2GB per slot (if riser board is added).

Max possible combination (32GB- 8 x 4GB DIMM)

                                                  (32GB- 16 x 2GB DIMM w/ riser board installed)

Note:** * 32 GB memory supported ONLY w/dual processors. Not supported with 120W processors. Click here for xw8400 specs!!

xw8600:

xw8600, as you know supports 128GB of memory. It has 8 slots on the motherboard and you can additional 8 slots using a riser board.Click here for xw8600 specs!! You can check the possible configuration list from the above link.

Note**: The 8-GB DDR2-667 DIMM is not supported on the system board. Check Manual for detailed info. Page 72

Hope I have explained everything.

Good luck!!

Best Regards,

John

Re: XW6400, XW8400, and XW8600 and 8GB FB DIMMS

 Hello @JAFeghali,

Yes, xw8600 supports 8GB modules. But the note saying that 8GB DDR2-667 are NOT supported on the system board means you cannot install 8 x 8GB combination (in other words you need to have a memory riser board to install 8GB modules). Also you need to have 2 processors (CPU's) to install more than 16GB of memory.

Hope that explains everything.

Good Luck!!

Best Regards,

John

Re: XW6400, XW8400, and XW8600 and 8GB FB DIMMS

Hello Jose,

"xw8600 supports 8GB of memory"

But ones has to follow the following rules/conditions in order to install the 8GB module or to install more than 32GB of memory.

You need to have the following to install 8GB modules:

  • Your server should have dual processors (2 CPU's) installed.
  • Your server should have a riser board. (Memory riser boards are additional boards used to add more slots and thereby enabling one to add more memory)

Without Riser board your server will not support the following:

  • Quad Rank memory cannot be installed (Modules which say 4R PC3-XXXXX)
  • As I have already mentioned, you cannot install 8GB modules.
  • You cannot install more than 32GB of memory.

If you still are not able to follow, then refer the following table.

Good Luck!!!

BR,

John

Best Regards,
John

Re: XW6400, XW8400, and XW8600 and 8GB FB DIMMS

Hello,

I appreciate this is a very old thread, but it's still the top hit I got from Google when I was asking the same question so I decided it was the best place to post...

I can confirm that the xw8600 does support 8GB FBDIMMs in the system board, and does not need the memory riser.

My understanding had been exactly as John explained it, but I found 8x8GB FBDIMMs cheap on eBay and thought I'd take the risk and buy them, since given the AMB design I couldn't see why it shouldn't work. I tested them in one of my xw8600s, resulting in the screenshot below of 64GB passing Memtest86 with flying colours!

HP_xw8600_64GB.jpg

I tested 8x8GB in three different xw8600s, running dual X5470s and dual E5450s. The X5470s have 1050W PSUs, the E5450 has the 800W PSU. All are on BIOS v01.46. All passed.

I've since run 64GB stably for several weeks in my main dual X5470 machine.

I hope this is helpful for people to extend the life of these fantastic workstations.

Regards,
James
