I know you can make a copy of an existing app and rename it for one's own use in a specific situation. And you can modify the copy's functions (more or less).
It would be nice to be able to be able to change the icon to something, maybe a little more to its use (perhaps by downloading a picture).
Perhaps even further, have a "boilerplate" app (which can only be copied/existantiated) that allows you to not only have a custom picture for the icon, but also what ever functions and variables associated with it that are reasonable. They don't have to be related to some 'built-in' app. Then user programs and variables could be "clustered" around an object and make more sense to that application. This might even make it easier to share a set of related programs with others by simply sending the app object. And the User Program catalog could be cleaner and used for just the "stand-alone" singleton functions/programs for special use.

Changing of the icon would be nice, however, your other suggestions are already possible.
If you associate a program to your aplet, that program can declare all the variables/functions that you want to use and attach with the said aplet.
