Hello,

The HP website says that the HP 50G can do symbloic integration. Does this mean that it can give you the answer to an indefinite integral, or that it gives you all the steps leading up to the answer? I have only ever seen it give the answer, not the steps.

Thanks,

Hi,

Yes, the 50g can do symbolic integration.

Press MODE, select CAS and UNcheck "Numeric" and "Approx" (select OK twice to exit).

Example INTVX(1/(SQRT(1+X^2))

Answer -LN ( (1+X^2 ) -X )

(INTVX is in the white-shift CALC menu ( "4" key) )

(EDIT: note that X must not have anything stored in it i.e. not exist in VAR or VAR folders
this is true for any variable used for CAS commands )

The 50G can also do step-by-step

Press MODE, select FLAGS and scroll to no. 100, put a check next to it to select step-by-step on

now do the above example and it will do step-by-step.

See chapter 13 of the User Guide:

(The following is a reply from the OP's follow-up question whether the 50G symbolic or step fuction could be disabled using a test mode)

Hi,

The 50G does not have a "test" or "exam" mode and therefore is limited for which exams it may be used on.

For guidance see:

http://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetPDF.aspx/4AA4-4054ENUC.pdf

The HP Prime does have an exam mode and therefore may possibly be used on a wider range of exams.

However, it is always best to check with your college's own exam board which calculators you can use.

Regards.
