HP’s First Laptop: A look back at the HP-110

I recently read an article about HP’s first laptop, the HP-110, and it brought to mind the first “portable” computer I owned, and yes, I will be aging myself here… I was still in college and liked the idea that I could work on class-work both at home and at school. My first one had a unique design; the front cover and the keyboard were one unit. It had two 5 ¼ inch floppy drives and a LCD Display. It had no hard drive. There was no battery technology for the laptop, but that really didn’t matter. It was only practical to use on a desk at home, or in the library. The big thing for me on that old portable in the mid-80’s was that I discovered the on-line BBS boards that were starting up then. The true pre-cursor to the social media world that we see now, it was a fun time to be involved  meeting people and discussing topics. Oh, and I learned a new language using it, COBOL.

If you’re interested in learning more about HP’s first laptop, the HP-110 was blogged about recently by Anne Finnie.

"In films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, the future included things such as laptops and small, portable flat screen devices. Points for getting close. That said, the HP-110 – HP's first laptop computer – was an industry breakthrough when it came out in 1984."

Wow, that's a lot better looking than the "portable" we had in college. It was an old IBM PC 5155 and weighed 30 lbs! Not exactly portable! :smileyvery-happy:

I have NEVER seen one of these!  That is really awesome!
