I also just purchased a HP Pavilion Elite with a Blu-Ray player already inside that does not play Blu-Ray movies. When I called Tech support I was on the phone over two hours while they attempted to upload different codecs. After the two hours I was told by the tech that this happens and HP is currently working on the problem and in three to six months I will be contacted by phone when they solve this issue. Why did they sell a unit with features it clearly does not have and there is no solution in sight. I also emailed HP about this problem over a week ago and no one has responded to that. Way to stand behind a product they sell, they run and hide. I went out and bought three movies that now I can't play with this computer that doesn't do what it's supposed to do. I am deeply disappointed that I didn't buy a Dell that has an excellent customer service department and sells computers that actually do what they are sold to do!!!

I know your pain! Purchased a Pavilion d499t last Apr '08. Didn't hook it up 'til June-due to home remodeling project.
Around Sep I purchased my very 1st blu-ray movie, which i quickly discovered would not play! Since that time I have had contact with at least 4 or 5 different HP tech reps-from around the World. None of them could correct the problem. I had 2 of them take remote control of my computer with no satisfactory results!
A complete recovery was done at 1 point- which means I lost everything I had put into my new computer from the time I first turned it on; All my photos, my music, internet info, well-you get the picture! After all that, the last person I spoke with told me that from all the history in my "case # file" that everything she knew to try had ALREADY been done and suggested that if there was a Best Buy near that I take it there for "warranty" service.
They, in turn had to ship it out-of-state for replacement of my blu-ray drive-which they said was defective. I picked it back up exactly one month later-on Nov 30
Guess what?! It STILL does the exact same thing it did before! I get the message about the "content is protected......" !
NOW I'm hot! I want HP just to take the computer back and refund my $1,936.00 YES, that's right-almost $2,000.00 for something that won't do what they said it would do!! NOW, I really don't know what my options are! HP already informed me that their return policy is--GET THIS!- 15 days from receipt of their product!
I'm about to the point where I'm either gonna pay someone to completely tear the thing apart and re-build it, or I'm gonna throw it in a dumpster-after I "sledge-hammer" it! My one year warrany will be up in Apr '09 and I really haven't gotten to use my "new" computer!!
Frustrated in Ohio!

HDMI unfortunately has something called HDCP, which like others have said prevents you from playing certain content on unprotected outputs i.e. monitors without HDCP support. In fact, I may think Blu-Ray may itself require HDCP-compatible outputs. I have a feeling that you could do dual-monitor with Blu-Ray, BUT all the outputs must support HDCP and be digital. If that's not the case, then it will not play. (I may be incorrect about this though).
You will find this is the same behavior across all computer makers and platforms, so no matter where you go you will run into the same problem.

Does the drive play any other type of discs (regular DVD, CD)?
Do you get any error messages when trying to play Blu-Ray?
What kind of monitor and cable connection are you using?
What exact model of PC do you have?

Does your drive play any type of disc (DVD, CD)?
Is the drive able to burn discs?
Do you have more than one monitor/TV hooked up?
What type of cable/connection are you using to connect to the monitor/TV?
