Can I connect a displayport monitor to a laptop that doesn't have displayport?

I do have HDMI and VGA but I'm not sure whether it will convert the signal to be inputted to the monitor from the laptop.

Hi,

You will get much better and simpler with HDMI (digital - VGA is analog, you need a converter/adapter). If your monitor had HDMI port then use it otherwise you can use HDMI Displayport cable as one of these:

The monitor only has Displayport.

As mentioned above, using HDMI - DP cable will do the trick nicely (you may not get sound, only DP++ has sound but still not really good).

So I bought a DP to HDMI Adapter, HDMI out from my laptop to the DP/HDMI adapter and into the monitor.  The issue I'm having is the monitor isn't detected.

At some laptops you have to activate the additional graphics port.
Check your manual.

(P.S. - why don't you bought a monitor with hdmi input?)
