Display Driver problem

I've received my new HP Pavilion HPE 180t about a week ago.  Once The system was up and running the screen would darken momentarily, but would recover with the following message:  "Display Driver stopped responding and recovered, Nvidia Windows Mode Driver Version 187.47 Stopped working and has successfully recovered."

What began as an occasional problem has become a persistent problem particularly when using the Web.  I've updated all the drivers, etc. and would like a solution as soon as possible.

Re: Display Driver problem

Hey shamblinj.....

First off, what type of gpu did your machine come with? is it a dedicated video card or is it onboard? Secondly, you said you had updated all drivers? Have you updated past the 187.47 driver or is that your current driver? the reason I ask is that, some of nvidia's drivers recently have caused some problems and this may be a reason ( they released a driver for the 9 series, numbered 196.75 that caused alot of cards to over heat and quickly removed it from their site), you could try using a previous version or doing a roll back.

Re: Display Driver problem

Look under the Freeze posts for the latest reference to a bios update for the Pegatron motherboards if you are using the HPE-180t.

Exact same problem here.  We even had our original machine replaced and the new one (Pavilion Elite HPE-180t) has the same problem.

Re: Display Driver problem

Well that computercomes with many different options for video cards, since you mentioned Nvidia in your post then I assume it is the GT 220 or GTX 260 and the latest driver for those cards is lacated at the following link:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_196.21_whql.html

As for the ATI cards the Radeon 4xxx & 5xxx series driver is located at the following link for 64bit and then 32bit

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=win7/windows-7-64bit

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=win7/windows-7-32bit

Update to the proper driver and see if things work better.

Re: Display Driver problem

I just tried to apply the fix that HP suggested.  They suggested to update the nVidia driver for the Geoforce GT 220 from version 187.47 to version 196.21.  I did exactly that and received the error message "The nVidia setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware.  Setup will now exit."

What is a person to do?

Re: Display Driver problem

Go to NVIDIA and download the latest driver to your desktop.  197.13 is the latest. Use DriverSweeper in Safe mode F8 at boot time to clean our all the NVIDIA stuff. Then reboot and install the latest driver.  Turn off your antivirus during the install process.

Also, HPE-180t users should be on system bios level 5.27.

Re: Display Driver problem

[ Edited ]

I updated to the nVidia driver version 196.21 from version 187.47 and received the same error message as before:  nVidia Display Driver version 196.21 has stopped responding and has successfully recovered.  That is the second nVidia driver version that didn't work.    I will next update to the latest released version 197.13 to see if that works.  Has anyone else had any luck with version 197.13?

Thanks.
