HDMI Connection to HD TV

I just set up my new d5100t.  When I connect my HDMI cable to the monitor, it works perfectly.  When I then connect the same HDMI cable to my HD TV, I get nothing.  The HDTV input on the TV works because that is how I connect by cable to the TV.  Any suggestions on how to make the connection to the HD TV?
