HDMI port not behaving properly on an LP2475w

I'm having an odd issue with my LP2475w monitor in which text appears blurry when connected through the HDMI input, and crisp when connected via DVI. The source is a new Mac Mini (5,3). This model has an HDMI port, and uses and included adapter for DVI. I've confirmed that the monitor and the system are indicating the proper resolution (1920x1200@60hz) when connected to the HDMI port and using the included adapter to connect to the monitors DVI port. When using the HDMI input on the monitor, using the same source, the text appears pixellated and hard to read. It makes the text appear as if it weren't rendered with the right number of vertical lines, and has a chunky appearance with odd high contrast areas surrounding the typeface. It doesn't seem as if the source is to blame, as it is outputting what I assume is the same signal via the same port in both cases. Is this a known issue? Is there a sharpness setting or filter somewhere to blame, that I can shut off via the on screen menus?

Re: HDMI port not behaving properly on an LP2475w

Greetings,

Have you tried with a different HDMI cable? There was a run of bad HDMI cables that were nearly DOA from the factory. Your symptoms sound very similar to that of a bad cable. It is best to choose a mid-grade cable that is able to produce a high bandwidth of information for the best display.

Good luck

Re: HDMI port not behaving properly on an LP2475w

I found another brand new HDMI cable to test with, and the issue persists. The cable that I'm using is the original HDMI cable that came with the monitor. I would assume, with a digital signal, that it would be all-or-nothing; the signal is transmitted or not, but I don't know anything about these different HDMI specs. It really seems as if there is some sort of sharpness filtering or weird profile on the HDMI input that does not exist on the DVI input.

Re: HDMI port not behaving properly on an LP2475w

I should have caught this earlier. If you are extending on a TV, your resolution should be no higher than 1920 x 1080. The TV's are only capable of handling a vertical lines of resolution of 1080. This is why they are called 1080p or 1080i. 720p models can only handle 720 lines of vertical resolution.

See if this corrects your issue.

Re: HDMI port not behaving properly on an LP2475w

The display is my HP LP2475w monitor. The source output is 1920x1200 at 60hz and the display is set for 1920x1200 at 60hz.

Re: HDMI port not behaving properly on an LP2475w

I apologize. Some how I read into this too much thinking it was a TV. Perhaps installing the monitor drivers might help:

I have same problem ... we are both using the same monitior on Mac (not Windows).  Where can we find the same or similiar utility for Mac OS?

Hi BrentW,

Similar or probably the same problem here: HP LW2475w monitor via HDMI connected to my Macbook Retina, upgraded to the very latest OS version 10.8.3

The issue is that  the fonts aren't smoothed (anti-aliased). Everything else (i.e. all graphics) looks perfect.
I've tried  the suggestion on http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090828224632809: defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2

but to no avail.

Your link is of no use, unfortunately, as there are no drivers for the apple Mac.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you!

Re: HDMI port not behaving properly on an LP2475w

Hello Interrobb,

I am no MAC expert, but have you tried testing the monitor on another device? That will at least eliminate the computer or monitor.

Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

Thanks
