HIS Radeon HD 4670 not recognised by Win 7

Ok, now that the S6500NX is finally installed with Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit, the only remaining obsticle is getting the system to recognise the video card: an HIS Radeon HD 4670 ("IceQ" AGP 8X 1Gb DDR3). It is compatable with DirectX 10.1. I selected "AGP/Onboard" in the Bios. I've been messing around with different Catalyst versions of the driver, from 9.x, 10.x to 12.4 (the latest). The driver seems to install without error, but the adapter/driver is never automatically recognised by Windows. If I go into the device manager and "update driver" manually, then select the Radeon HD 4670 WDM driver (not the mobility one!), and reboot, the device manager has a yellow "!" and says it was disabled (every version of the driver from 9.x to 12.4 said this). I've tested the card in my Gigabyte K8 Triton based system (running XP SP3 but not on the network) and XP sees the card just fine.

Many tech sites (eg tomshardware.com) talk about this card, and seems to be problematic for some installations, some Catalyst driver issues, but by all accounts should be recognised by Win 7.

When the adapter was initially installed, Win 7 assigned the "Std VGA graphics adapter" to it. The monitor is an old Dell M782, which did get detected, but because it is using on the Std windows adapter none of the refresh values show up. hdwwiz does recogise the adapter and selecting the lagacy option in hdwwiz only shows the ones from Intel.

Questions:

1. Is this a problem with Win 7 or HIS or the Catalyst driver? (or some combo)
2. Is this card even compatible with Win 7 32bit?
3. Or is this an AGP bios issue on the A7V8X-LA mobo?

That is a baffling situation.  Normally, a video card works, or it doesn't.

In other words, since you presumably have the monitor cable connected to the new video card, you are getting a video signal out of it, since you are getting a VGA-resolution image on the screen.

So, the card is being recognized by the BIOS and PC.

The problem seems to be with the fact that the drivers won't install, and unfortunately, I don't know why that is.

The card is compatible with W7.

What monitor you have hooked up to it shouldn't matter.

The card may be too much for the old PC to handle.

That PC may only be able to work with one of those older cards I had mentioned in a reply back to you some time ago, such as an ATI Radeon 9600 128 MB AGP card.

Yes Paul, indeed you did mention that - sorry I did not take your advice (although I still will not use ebay or craiglist). But I am thinking this is a general AGP - mobo - bios - Win 7 - driver issue. I had an older Leadtek Winfast A280 128MB AGP 8x (Nvidia TI 4800) laying around and it is not being recognised either. Sadly neither is a PCI ATI Radeon 9250 250MB V/D/VO card I borrowed from a neighbor (who is over looking at this "thing" and calling this endevor of mine, my "frankenstein". lol) All I ever get in device manager is "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" no matter what card I put in of the three I have. If I force it to recognise either of the cards manually (after installing drivers) I reboot and always get the "!" -  "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". I am cruising around various tech support sites to see if anyone has solved this issue.

I am going to try to take out the Sound Blaster pci card to see if that has any effect on the problem (a few posts elsewhere mentioned this). Good thing I am retired ...

That is indeed very frustrating!

There must be some BIOS/hardware issues.

But the 2 cards you installed are not windows 7 capable cards, so all that W7 is gonna do with those is assign Standard VGA drivers to them too.

It would really be good if you can test it out with an older W7 AGP video card.

If one of those doesn't work, then you will have to raise the white flag, unless the audio card is causing a confict.

Maybe too many resources are being used.

I did check the MS compatibility lists: ATI Radeon 9250 PCI is listed as supported for Win7 32-bit. The Leadtek Winfast A280 is also support for Win7 32-bit. Both stating "No action required". The HIS HD 4670 IceQ is listed as well, but with "download required". One site (http://answers.microsoft.com) suggested it was because of either an AGP / Win7 on a Nforce 3 or Via chipset issue, talking about the VIA CPU to AGP Controller driver upgrade. That may explain why the AGP cards are not working but not the PCI card, unless it is IRQ or other resource related. Taking out the Creative Sound Blaster did nothing to solve the issue, whether the onboard sound was enabled or not.

Hi Thom,

Open up your PC and read the label on the power supply.  Most of the AMD 4670s indicate the need for a 400+ watt power supply.

A new person  I bought an ENERMAX Tomahawk ETK500AWT 500W ATX12V V2.2 . The old 300W PS fan died. The 500W works perfectly. I read the requirements for the HD 4670 after I bought this PS, so I am glad I bought something that worked.

Interesting.

My apologies. I was always under the impression nothing less than a Radeon 9500 would work with W7.

I only have the nForce chipset drivers for XP.

I do not believe they have any for Vista or W7.

I notice that the Compaq Presario S6500NX Desktop PC was not regression tested for VISTA or Window 7 by Compaq/HP.  Did you by chance run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor?  Windows 7 doesn't guarantee compatibility with older PCs and your is a 2003 vintage.

I am not sure how to respond ... so I will do my best, but reading through many posts here in these forums and elsewhere I'd say between Compaq / HP, little was done to test the older systems, maybe compatible or not - the scrap/throw-away mentality (sometimes for good reason). When I received this system, the hard drive had crashed and the PS was failing. (It had Win XP SP3 installed) So was not able to run the MS Upgrade advisor but came here to these forums for advice - with the excellent help of Paul in these forums! - see this thread "Cannot get past "boot disk failure ...". The only thing I could do was run the MS Upgrade advisor after installing Win 7 Home Premium 32-bit (I have included that report below). No software has been loaded yet, just the plethora of Win7 updates as well as chosing all the driver updates MS listed as optional. As you can read in the report the graphics card failed (I currently have the HD 4670 installed but it is listed as a "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" since it does not seem to matter which card I install). I am currently investigateing the VIA CPU to AGP theory that this may be the issue. There seem to be upgrades for it, but only for the ASUS class of A7V8X mobo's but not for the "- LA Kamet2" since that apparently was a mobo specially mfg'd for Compaq.
