It depends if it happened suddenly or over time, most of the time it's the video controller inside the monitor that is failing, OR your backlight that is giving up... At any rate you should call HP if it's still under warranty....

Sorry, but most of the time it's the video cable, that is not fixed properly at one side - pc or monitor, check both sides!
It could be a broken wire inside the cable too, but only for (very) old cable.
