Monitor is going to sleep

[ Edited ]

Hello everyone!

I have recently installed Windows 7, 32-bit version. But when I'm on the computer my monitor randomly goes black and says "monitor is going to sleep". My computer won't wake up and I have to reboot it.

I have installed the graphic card (ATI Radeon Express 1150)

My monitor is a HP vs19b

I've had the problem before when I was on Vista, but I can't remember what I did back then. Do I have to update my BIOS or something like that?

Any help is greatly appreciated :smileyhappy:

Re: Monitor is going to sleep

I read the guide, but thats not the problem I'm having.

My problem is that my monitor suddenly says it's going to sleep while I'm on the computer. It won't wake up so I have to reboot my computer.

Re: Monitor is going to sleep

Epleku, have you tried changing the settings in the Control Panel under Power Options?  I would check to see if the settings are correct for your needs.  Here is a guide for Win7.

Same exact issue.  HP2009m monitor.  Funny thing is my best friend and I both have the exact same computer bought on the exact same day from the same place and are both having the exact same problem.

Hers started about 2 -3 weeks ago, and mine just started last week.  It's happening about ever 30-40 minutes or so, and the only solution is to manually shut down.

Settings should not be the issue since they have not been altered for nearly a year.  It seems to be something that starts with a certain date on these computers, and is something that seems like a recall needs to fix.

It is frustrating to say the least to have spent this much money on a pc and be having this kind of a problem after only a couple of years.

It seems not like a setting issue but an HP problem that seriously needs to be addressed.  I have cleaned all of the fans, and it will make a random small engine cessna noise when this happens.

So the pc is no longer working?
>after only a couple of years.
A pc can collect much dust in this time.
Without cleaning inside, the graphics chip can become hot and be damaged.
>I have cleaned all of the fans, and it will make a random small engine cessna noise when this happens.
What do you mean with this?
A fan makes the noise when you are cleaning it?
How did you clean it?

Can you test the monitor at another (working) pc?

You could test your pc and watch the gpu temperature.
See if it increases too much until the pc stops working.

For example with:
rivatuner:

GPU-Z:

Re: Monitor is going to sleep

This is Kharma's boyfriend. As far as i can tell, the PC seems to just be shutting down its connection with the monitor. Ive looked at the CPU light and when it goes to "sleep" it will still be blinking occassionaly, so that would lead me to believe that there isnt a problem with the motherboard or proccessor, or i would think anyways.

I just thoroughly cleaned out the inside of the PC a few weeks ago, making sure to be very delicate, using canned air and a vaccuum to clean every nook and cranny of dust and junk off all the componets, including the years off lodged junk on the CPU fan.

It worked fine afterwards, I mean these problems diddnt start until just recently, like a couple of days ago, and like she said, her and her best friend bought the same computer at the same time and her friend's started doing what seems like the exact thing kharma's is doing, but a few weeks earlier for her friend.

And what she means from the cessna noise is, when it goes to "sleep" there was one occassion that it started making a loud repetitive humming/droning noise, the only way i could describve it is if youve played any video games, similar to a game glitching and it making the dreaded "crash" sound.

Her monitor is the same age as her computer, and it seems to work fine. I have another monitor here for my computer that i could test her computer on, but i doubt it is the problem.

Also, an important fact that wasnt mentioned is that she is an avid player of the game World of Warcraft, and it seems to only be doing this sleep problem when she playes the game, not instantly when she opens up the game, but after 30-40 mins or so of play it will do it. And the computer will be rebooted, and she wont get on the game, and it will sit all night on with no problems, but when she opens the game and starts playing, it does it.  =[

Please, if theres anyone that can help her with a solid answer, not the go to answer of check your settings or something, please reply. We would both very much appreciate it.

Re: Monitor is going to sleep

>anyone that can help her with a solid answer
I doubt that anybody can do this without standing in front of the pc.
>I have another monitor here for my computer that i could test her computer on, but i doubt it is the problem.
It's a normal procedure to test one component after the other.
Of course you can start with the graphics part, but why does your friend tell us the monitor model, when she thinks it's not the problem?.
Also I suggested to watch the gpu temperature
Of course you can exchange or add a card at once, but we don't know your hardware.
How shall we help without more informations?
We don't have a crystal ball here ...
