Monitor problems HP w2408h [ Edited ]

Hello.

I have the HP w2408h monitor that came with a computer kit about 2-3 years ago.

The monitor randomly turns blank a few seconds after I turn it on. The power button on top stays blue, which means it's not in hybernation mode. I'd press it again to turn it off and then back on, and the monitor would display for about a second, but immediately turn off.

If I'd leave it alone, it'd seldomly keep on for a few seconds, then go blank (though still on) few minutes, then displays the screen again, and so on.

I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the power, audio, and all of the other parts that connect to the monitor, but nothing seemed to work.

I noticed that 'slapping' the sides of the monitor a couple times, it makes it flicker, and if I do it hard enough it'll stay on without any problems at all later.

But the next time I turn it on (about an hour or so after turning it off), I'd get the same problem again.

I know I could just leave the monitor on all of the time to avoid having to hit it, but I don't think keeping it on all the time is a good idea, or cost effective.

I'm not an expert, but my guess is something is loose inside the physical shock probably helps complete a circuit somewhere inside. If I could, I'd like to open the monitor to take a look inside. But there doesn't seem to be any screws anywhere for me to even open (which makes me wonder how they got the stuff inside?).

Any help, please?

Hi,

With all the slapping going on you should check the cables and make sure that everything is tight both at the monitor and the PC.

Try your monitor and cable on another PC to separate the monitor and cable from a possible PC issue.  If you have a separate cable then try another cable.

Try a differnet monitor and cable on your PC to make sure that your PC is not the problem.

Thank you for the reply.

I do not have a another cable to connect with.

I will however purchase one to test it.

I do not know if the monitor degrades over time but I will find out. I will get back to this thread and post results.

If I still have to slap the monitor silly(lol) after plugging it into the other PC, I will post results.

In the meantime, I'd like instructions of how to open this monitor to make sure everything inside is tight.

Hi,

If after all the different tests you conclude it's the monitor then might contact HP Support for additional assistance.

HP's support number is 800-474-6836 or 800-HPINVENT or online here.

You might consider trying some spray electrical contact cleaner on all of the monitors buttons and the power on and off switch. 

BTW, the power on and off button should have a click feel to it when depressed.

After purchasing another set of cables and power lines, my monitor showed no difference with the other PC's.

All of the buttons have a 'click' feeling to it, everything appears clean as well.

During my testing however, I've noticed that it 'flickers' (as in, going blank, black, and then showing the display all while the blue button confirms it is on) even when it's not connected to a PC.

When the cable for the information is not plugged in, a white box appears with a message that says something similar to "Check Monitor Cable". Slapping the sides of the monitor again (only when it recieves a certain amount of shock), it displays it again without problems. This way, I confirmed that nothing is wrong with the PC or power cables, but the monitor itself.

It flickers on and off when the power button on the top is blue (indicating "ON" state), and will continue doing so until some sort of shock makes it 'snap out of it'. I believe something is loose inside, but I do not know how to open it.

I do not wish to purchase another monitor, and the warranty for this monitor expired.

There are no problem with the pixels themselves, each one works and displays perfect color like new. But it rather seams like it's not getting power somehow.

I've also noticed that when I turn the monitor off, I hear a sort of light static shock inside, muffled. I don't know if this is normal. But in any case, I wish to open the monitor. Is there a tutorial somewhere?

I don't know of a tutorial for the HP w2408h monitor.  Monitors are generally considered consumables.
