I hate to tell you this, but after reading several posts on this message board, it's clear that HP has a major problem with many Pavilion models. I have a p6724y, and am having the same problems. Return the thing while you still can. My 14-day return expired, and now I'm stuck with a new piece of junk. Back to Dell.

I experienced the same issue with this HP computer. It has been back to Best Buy twice within the first two weeks and the Technicians reinstalled the Operating System but the computer continued to loose capability, first it stopped recognizing the CD/DVD player, then the Function Keys stopped working, the Self-diagnostics did nothing to run for 12 hours straight and completely wiped out any "restore points".
I too took it back to Best Buy for a refund but found out their return policy is 14 days and I WAITED TOO LONG so now i am stuck with it but since I PAID EXTRA FOR BEST BUY Technical Service for ONE YEAR, Best Buy will DIAGNOSIS the problem for me.
HERE IS MY ADVICE. If an HP product "malfunctions" within that 14 day return policy, RUN DON'T WALK and get rid of it. So far I have had the computer for less than three months and it looks like I will not get to keep it FOREVER.
I guess there is always E-BAY to sell it for whatever I can get.
The fact that HP is getting out of the personal computer line kind of maybe suggest even they know when it is time to give up.
