No video display.

Okay so i have a HP computer. About a year ago we sent it in to get fixed and it came back with the VGA port covered up saying do not remove. So then we switched to DVI and that's been working fine...until recently. No signal from it. It's not the cord either, it's the port. My last option is the HDMI port. However, my TV somehow won't automatically detect the change and i have no way to view the control panel to change the computer from dvi/vga to HDMI.

Re: No video display.

Hi,

Please post the HP product number for your PC.  What monitor are you using and what port types are on the monitor?

How do you know for sure if it is the port and not the cord?

Typically when the VGA port is covered up with a "Do not Remove" cap it means that the PC has a discrete video card installed.   Do you have a discrete video card installed? If yes, which card?

Re: No video display.

It's a Hp m8400f

The ports consist of VGA, DVI, HDMI, and Svideo. (VGA has the "Do not remove" cap.) --and i need the DVI to change the settings on the computer to HDMI.

I know that it's the port and not the cord because I tested it with my other computer, along with the monitor.

Also i'm not sure if we have a discrete video card.

Thanks!

Re: No video display.

Hi,

If you determined that the DVI port on the video card is bad then replace the video card.  One of the below video cards will work with your PC. Please review your video port requirements before buying a video card.

$50--->NVIDIA GT 430 9.6 GB/s --single slot width

$65--->NVIDIA GT 520 8 GB/s -- single slot width

$70---> NVIDIA GT 430 22.4 GB/s – single slot width

$80--->NVIDIA GT 440 25.6 GB/s -- single slot width

$130-->NVIDIA GT 545 43 GB/s -- single slot width ---- might be hard to find but perhaps only in the store

$110-->NVIDIA GT 240 1GB DDR5. 54.4 GB/s  single slot width This card doesn't support DirectX 11 which is optionally used in some of the newer PC games but it is an excellent performer

These HP 'how-to" articles should be helpful.
