PNY 8500 GT and HP Pavilion A6400f ----- problems

[ Edited ]

I have a Pavilion a6400f and I would like to use my PNY GeForce 8500 GT card in it.  I have been fooling around with this for about 7 days now and its about time that I either declare the card DOA and buy another card, or throw my hands up in disgust and buy another card.

I do not want to spend any money however, so I am here with proverbial tail between legs.  I have an aftermarket Thermaltake 430 psu, so I know that I have enough power.  The computer is completely stock otherwise.

The problem is that Vista does not 'see' the card.  I disabled the stock integrated GPU, installed the 8500 GT (leaving the monitor hooked to the stock VGA out) and rebooted.  The computer boots and displays normally.  However like I said Device Manager does not see the new hardware.

I have tried the drivers from Nvidia, but they say that they cannot find drivers for the hardware on my system.  I have tried a number variations of the aforementioned process with no luck.  Any help would be awesome.

BJ, did you use the drivers that came on the disk?  If not, I would try them to see if that helps.  Make certain that the card is seated fully.  If not, this can cause the problem that you are experiencing.

I certainly can't believe nVidia doesn't have drivers that are compatible with the PNY 8500 GT.  In fact, here is a link to nVidia's website and the drivers for the GeForce 8 Series cards:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_32bit_186.18_whql.html

Let us know if this helps.

Re: PNY 8500 GT and HP Pavilion A6400f ----- problems

TeacherGeekster, I have tried the current driver from Nvidia.  I have even tried 10 other drivers for the 8 series in decreasing levels of "newness".

The card is properly seated, If I push any harder on the card I might push it through the case.

I think that the drivers work and are compatible but they do not "see" the card.

I am not sure that this is even a HP specific issue, it may be Vista issue, or even a dead card.

However it seems to me that since the fan on the card spools up when the computer boots that it isnt dead.

Any other ideas?  I have no problem with esoteric answers, ritual sacrifice has not been ruled out.
