Purchased HP 2311x 23" LED monitor.

Newly purchased monitor  boxed as HP 2311x 23" monitor.  Only LCD documentation provided Product no. XP598A. Is product LED or LCD?

HP on-line support does not recognize product number.

Do you mean this monitor?  It's LED.

However, at this HP web page for the HP 2311x I see LCD on the web page WLED in the documentation.  Very interesting in deed.

I'll let HP know about the discrepancy in the documentation.

There is no discrepancy in HP's documentation. The 2311x is a LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor... The liquid crystals are what creates the image you see. The WLED (white light emitting diode), also referred to as just LED, is the backlight source. Therefore the monitor is a LCD monitor with WLED backlight. From your link to the 2311x;

It is both... any monitor that claims to be LED is inherently LCD. LCD creates the picture and LEDs provide the backlight. If it claims to be WLED... nothing has changed... still LCD with LED backlight... just that WLEDs are a specific kind of LED.

I have several 2311x monitors and they all are working great.

The HP Sales web page show the HP 2311x as a LED monitor.  See this Sales web page. Review the specifications here which also indicate LED.  Yet the HP Support web page indicates LCD as a label.  The monitor is WLED (white light emitting diode) and should not be confused with LCD.  HP needs to correct the web page title.
