Re: Video Card Upgrade

I'd put everything back together and go to "disable 7300GS" from the display adapter selection, then your monitor will have generic settings. Restart the computer again. Make sure the power to your cpu is plugged in.

THEN, shut down, install new card, start up with cd in cd/dvd slot, or when you are given the option, have the computer look for the latest driver online (mine did).

After it boots up and all is running, If the monitor is still not coming up, must be something not working with that card, a conflict of some sort, maybe try a differnet power connector.

If the monitor is up with those low display settings, that's good, then go to the dispaly driver section and find the driver for the new card.

Oh, and if you can, make sure there is power coming from the power supply to the mother board connector AND the cpu connector using a test light, some power supplies do get put together on a Friday :smileywink:

Re: Video Card Upgrade

I'm sorry; I seem not to be conveying the nature of the symptom. When I install the new video card, the computer doesn't even boot from BIOS, much less launch Vista. It isn't a Windows issue at all. And the computer boots and runs fine with the new power supply in with the old video card, so the power supply's working fine. I'm starting to wonder whether I aimed a little too low with the 450W unit, though: all the "AMD certified" power supplies on their list are 500W and above. What do you think?

Re: Video Card Upgrade

djrosen2,

I think you should follow my advice and get a NVIDIA card instead of using the ATI 5xxx.  You also need to solve your memory problem on your other post.

Re: Video Card Upgrade

I agree with Dave. Also consider a) people do get "bad cards" b) You can propbably call support. Sorry, I'm stumped on that one

Re: Video Card Upgrade

Internet research has raised the possibility that the BIOS running this motherboard may not allow any PCI-E 2.0-compatible video card to run in the PCI-E slot at all: can you confirm?

Re: Video Card Upgrade

Dunno if this will help, but it sounds as though your situation is similar to mine of a year ago. ==== My Christmas upgrade from an nVidia GE Force 8500 to an nVidia GT 440 went smoothly for my HP Pavilon a6250t although getting the old card out was tricky: the little "retaining latch" that looks like the ones at the end of your RAM stickslots actually works in the opposite way: you press it down to release the old card! (You also have to be bright enough to unscrew the metal bracket in the back that "retains" the metal lips of the various cards -- took me a while to realize that!) The upgrade, even without adding to my basic 2megs of RAM, still jumped my Skyrim from a somewhat stodgy/jumpy "Low" rating right up to "high." Adding 2 megs boosted me to very high with a decent frame rate. Been quite happy with results overall. - MJM

Re: Video Card Upgrade

Hi saydin82,

Review this posted document for background information.

Most of the modern video cards are going to require a power supply that is bigger than 300 watts with a few exceptions. However, video cards that don't require a biiger power supply might not give you the performance improvement that you are looking to achieve.

What applications are you using that need improved video performance?
