i have an hp a420n and a viewsonic vx2235wm monitor

I have win xp on an HP a420n with a VIA/S3G Unichrome IGP graphics card, after upgrading the BIOS, Grpahics Card and instaling the Monitor software, Viewsonic VX2235wm, I still can not set the resolution for the optimal values, 1680 x 1050 @60Hz, Anyone know what I'm missing?

Hi,

If you successfully installed the monitor driver (inf file) then the graphics card is not capable of the resolution that you need.

You will need an AGP video card. Be sure to match the card up with the size of the power supply in your PC which is only 250 watts.  You might have to use a VGA card to match up with the 250 watt power supply.

Thanks very kindly, your solution and the prior one both allowed me to resolve the issue. One new PCI video card plus a new 400w power supply and everyting works fine now. FYI: I desided on the PCI video card because that bus is universal so I should be able to reuse the card for another machine if need be. I heard that the AGP bus is on its last leg. Was told this by the computer store clerk!
