shadows on w2408

My w2408 is a bit less than two years old (Christmas 2007).  It has picked up strong right-tailing shadows, mainly for dark images against light backgrounds, that seem to be getting worse.  The computer is running Windows XP.  I updated the display driver, no effect.  I attempted to change to a "preferred" resolution through My Display, but this button does nothing (by which I mean it literally does nothing -- it reloads the dialog box image, and that's that).  I tried to update my version of My Display, but I already have the most recent one (more than a year old -- for a utility known to be buggy and inadequate!).

Before these shadows became so problematic, I was quite fond of this monitor, but now I am discouraged.  How can HP's support be so useless?

Re: shadows on w2408

I also did a factory reset, based on another post I found here.  No effect.  I'm not set up to experiment with different cabling options, but if someone can convince me that it will help, I can go invest more money in this project.
