w2216h via DVI - flickering, text too sharp, etc

[ Edited ]

Hi. I'm on an HP a6614f with w2216h monitor.

I've upgraded the video card to an Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT by PNY and have been connecting the monitor and card via VGA. Today I just got my DVI-HDMI adapter (got one cheap from HK off eBay if that makes a difference) in the mail and tried it out. The picture was horrible! There were veritcal lines everywhere. I was able to fix this by going into the Nvidia control panel and changing the digital color format from RGB to YCbCr44. However, I still had other problems.

The monitor flickers a lot, sometimes at two or three seconds at a time, or even longer. Text would also look too sharp, making it difficult to read, and there's this one area in the middle of the monitor where the text would be a little blurry. The blurriness seemed to correct itself (I didn't really do anything except unplug and replug the HDMI cable on the adapter end) but the problem with text sharpness and flickering still exists. Also, colors were a little bit off. For example, Firefox's red underline for misspelled words were showing up gray.

My resolution when using VGA is 1680x1050, which is the native res. When I switch to HDMI, the native res is higher than this and when changed to that resolution, looks horrible. The edges get cut off or something, so I left it at 1680x1050, which is what I'm used to anyway.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix my problems? I'm currently back to using VGA.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: w2216h via DVI - flickering, text too sharp, etc

It's been over a year since I posted this...

I just got a DVI-->HDMI cable and am currently connecting my PC and the monitor that way. No more flicker or anything. The only issue that persists is that text is too sharp when the monitor is set to Movie mode. There is a yellow outerglow on black text that makes it difficult to read. In Photo mode the text looks fine but the colors are not as vibrant as in Movie mode.

I tried adjusting the settings of my GPU. Lowering the "Digital vibrance" will take care of the  text problem but then color is totally off.

Is there any way to adjust my settings so that the colors are vibrant as Movie mode but no outerglow on the text?

Fiddling with the ClearType settings seems to have solved the problem. Hooray!
