Hi, I was attempting to fix my neighbors computer and she failed to keep her recovery disks.
It starts up, shows the HP logo and then goes straight to a black screen with a blinking cursor.
I had an Acer laptop I was working on which had the same problem and I found that by using the recovery method built in to it is that C drive became corrupt so I wiped it and installed ubuntu. I didn't want to have to resort to a total wipe out of this HP because it's their kids computer with some school stuff on it.
It's an HP Pavilion 520w which runs XP home.
I've tried resetting the bios to the original settings. I've also tried resetting the RAM and removed all peripheral devices and disks.
The only disk I have is a windows 7 64 bit, so I was able to boot from that to run memory diagnostics which showed no issues. I do have an XP Pro disk but it won't boot from that either. I know it has to have a recovery hidden partition but none of the function keys will work except to press F1 and F11 which brings up the BIOS. F8 doesn't work to access safe mode. I've tried to other function keys as well but no luck.

The 520w is a very old PC. It sound like the hard drive might be bad. When you booted up W7 did it see the hard drive?
You might try this bootable CD and see if you can access the hard drive. Ubuntu as an emergency boot CD.
Try this procedure:
Unplug the PC and open it up. Clean out all the dust. Carefully remove and replace all the cables going to the motherboard one at a time. Do the same for the memory dimms and the video and sound cards if you have any. Plug your PC back in a give it a go.

It would only allow me to do memory diagnostics because it said that the cpu isn't able to run 64 bit. But I'll try cleaning it out, ( can't wait to start sneezing) I have spare hard drives in case. so I'll give it a shot and update tomorrow. When it turns on it sounds like a tank, sounds like the fan may be going out too, gets pretty hot. I'll try replacing that too, maybe that will fix the annoying sound.
thanks again and i'll update tomorrow!
