My brand new HP is having the following issue: SMART Short Self-Test Failed- Completed with the read element of the test failed.
I did see this update on HP site but unfortunatly cannot boot W7 anymore... any idea on how to apply the patch using a boot disk?
Is the only option to ask HP to replace the failed HD?

Yes. You need to get a new drive from HP.

I have exactly the same problem on an HP computer that I purchased on March 21, 2010
I have had nothing but problems with this junk that I bought. I am supposed to have a SATA drive and found I have an ancient DVD (SCSI) and an SCSI DISK DRIVE
I am positive that the service (help) desk will be of NO assistance as they have never resolved one of the multitude of problems I have had with this computer
. I wish us both luck in trying to tresolve these issues.

Agree its been painful, got a HD replacement, then got a blue screen, had to get the factory sys restore CDs shipped, and still having issues with re-install, after hours of time spent on the phone and myself trying to restore my brand new PC. Will never repeat this HP mistake!
