CD-rom won't play

I have a software cde-rom that will not play in one computer but will play in the other computers.  It won't play in a HP pavillion and will play in our other HP Pavillion and our Dell Laptop.  I have installed the latest driver and gone through every step (except testing for failed CD/DVD drive) of the HP help when a drive cannot read discs.

What else can I do??

Re: CD-rom won't play

Hi,

From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.  Restart the PC.

Next, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.

Windows 7

Vista

Check if the drive is now working.

If the drive is not working, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Click to open the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.  Right click on the first channel and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When uninstalled repeat the process for each channel.  Also if an ATA controller is listed, right click and uninstall this, again not deleting drivers if asked. Then open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.

Reboot the PC and let Windows reinstall the devices.  Check the drive again.

If it still isn't working, run the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below again.

Windows 7

Vista

Next, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

Best wishes,

Am I understanding you correctly?  You can play a CD in one computer and it doesn't work but you could put that same CD into another computer and it will work?  Is it a "burned" CD?

You also said you installed the latest driver.  Did you go to the Device Manager and right-click on your CD Drive and select Scan for changes?

Re: CD-rom won't play

It is a purchased software cd-rom.  And, yes, I did scan for changes.  I am so frustrated.

Re: CD-rom won't play

Do you have an HP Pavilion Elite? Mine is 5 months old, and won't read and disk. Says to insert disk, when one is already in.

Re: CD-rom won't play

2dogs2birds,

If you're asking me if I have an HP Pavilion Elite, the answer is no.

I know a lot of people, not just HP owners, have been having the same problem and HP or Microsoft don't have a "real" solution for it.

Re: CD-rom won't play

I am having the same problem; I have a Presario with a TSST Corp CDW/DVD TS-H492A Drive; When I insert a disk, regardless what kind, the green lights blink inside the drive, but when I try and access the disk contents, the computer tells me to insert a disk. The drive [E:] is listed, but there is nothing in it. I am running Windows XP. Should I post this as a new problem?
