I have the same problem as AKIKA666 except it was an upgrade instead of a clean install and I can't get HP to help because I'm not in warranty. I also have an external HP lightscribe DVD ROM and it wouldn't even install the drivers. Windows says it can't install the drivers. In BIOS I can't go beyond the diagonistic log for the hard disk, it just won't let me. So I figured its not recognizing in BIOS, reason why I'm not seeing it in device manager. When the computer was in vista I didn't have this problem, now upgrading to 7 I can't even use my DVD drives which renders my computer somewhat useless and I can't stand it. There has to be a fix somewhere and all of us are trying to no avail, we can't get HP to help because we are out of warranty, of course we are, why do you think we are upgrading, to stick to the times. If this would of come up in the compability check I would never have upgraded but it didn't give us this warning. So we are screwed paying good money for the upgrade just to downgrade and not use the upgrade. I haven't done this yet but am thinking about it. One thing I want to add that before windows starts the green light turns on on my drive and I am able to open it then completely shuts off when windows loads. Please help anyone and you too HP this is frustrating . I want to have full usage of my computer again.

Thanks for the reply. Did you do this already? And if you did was it simple? or does the whole chip set have to be taken apart?

Yes, it is already and my dv9920us it is working fine. HP customer service said me you need change the motherboard, but I take a second opinion and this fix it the problem.
You need reballing only the chip with a defective welding, thats it.

Well after much research and trial and error. I have found a fix. I also lost dvd/audio and my video started having problems. I found a website on youtube by looking a HP DV9000 video, and they showed how to dismantle and fix this problem. so i did a step by step and removed my mobo took a pentourch to the nvidia gpu and reflowed the solder. Reassembly was just the reverse and when I booted up the laptop it installed all my drivers. bottom line everyting that was wrong with it is now fixed. You can fix it yourself for the price of a pentourch or go to ebay under hp dv9000 vider repair and most places will do it fo $79. it was fun for me

I am having the same problem as everyone else on my HP PAVILION dv99225nr entertainment notebook pc. My cd dvd rom drive is not recognized by the computer. When I did a system scan it came back that the device is unpluged. not a driver issue the device is unplugged. But how can that be it's built in to the laptop. So I thinking the only way to fix it is to take it to the computer repair shop and let them see how to plug it back in ,if that is the problem. The scan said that the cd dvd rom drive is not registering because it is not plugged in to the laptop. How can that be. It slide in and out of the side of the laptop there is no visable plug so how did it get unplugged. Now I have to talk to a computer tech at the shop and that will cost money I don't have right!!! craig d
