Can someone guide me through please!
After a few years my DVD/CD rom isn't functioning when I put a dvd or cd in the tray. There is no driver recognized. I have read the forum and and tried a few things but I can't seem to get started.
Do I need to re-install it? How do I get it running again??
Please help!
Dan

I'm sorry if I'm getting your hopes up for a good reply but I wanted to let you know that I'm having the same problem but only on a Pavillion dv6000. If I find an answer I'll let you know and I hope you do the same for me.

For all of the above posters. Take a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
This seems to be a frequent enough problem that Microsoft offers a solution.

I have the same problem with model dv9820.
I tried the device manager, looking in the BIOS and the Microsoft auto-fix, nothing worked.
I installed a new DVD drive and tried all the solutions again, still nothing.
I downloaded the latest BIOS update from HP and still nothing.
IS THERE NO SOLUTION EXCEPT TO TELL PEOPLE TO BUY FROM ANOTHER COMPANY?

The issue might be the NVIDIA video chip. Read this article.

Hi All.
1. If DVD drive is missing from My Computer -> Check in Device manager -> If there is a Yello exclamation on DVD drive then follow below steps
To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.Collapse this image Expand this image
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.Collapse this image Expand this image
- Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ControCaution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - In the right pane, if you have UpperFilters, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
- Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
- In the right pane, if you have LowerFilters, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
- Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
- Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer
> If above does not resolve the issue then need to swap HDD and DVD drive cables.
Hope it works

I have a pavillion dv9910us. It just recently stopped recognizing the dvd/cd-rom drive. I have tried "mr fixit" from the microsoft site and the above regedit file location does NOT have any "upper filters" or "lower filters" registry lines in that section (4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318). Only driver it can find is the generic microsoft cdrom.sys driver which does not work. The HP downloads do not have a dvd/cdrom driver available. Does anyone know the name of the dvd/cdrom driver from HP or where it is located in Windows Vista (do not see it in the system32/drivers folder). My dvd/cdrom drive opens and closes and the green light goes on but then stops. Windows explorer does not recognize the dvd (E) drive. ANY Help appreciated.
Steve

Steve,
Does Device Manager see the CD/DVD drive?
I have a DV9700t with VISTA SP2 and it uses the standard Microsoft driver.
Try a hard reset. Unplug the laptop, remove the battery and hold down the power sutton for 30-60 seconds. Replace the battery, plug the laptop back in a boot up. Does Device Mnager see the CD/DVD drive?

I tried that (disconnect power, remove battery, hold down start for about 1 min). Did not work!! went into BIOS and found boot start order is cd-rom boot enabled; floppy boot enabled; internal network adapter boot disabled. Do not see DVD/CDROM drive in device manager and does not locate it by plug & play hardware search.. Previously when it was in the device manager, the driver was a microsoft cdrom.sys file in the windows\system32\drivers folder. Also once before when it disappeared was after making some changes in the autoplay configuration (Itunes?). The regedit file (4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318) has:
dvd/cd-rom drives
cdrom
@%systemroot%\system32\storprop.dll,-17001
storprop.dll, dvdproppageprovider
%systemroot%\system32\imageres.dll,-30
storprop.dll, dvdclassinstaller

1
No upperfilters or lowerfilters.
Any other suggestions?
