Re: CD/DVD drive not recognized in hp pavilion dv6500

Thank you for the suggestion.

However, this has not solved the problem.

The Microsoft FIXIT cannot be effectively used with the VISTA operating system, or at least their download configuration checker does not work.

This problem is obviously very prevalent in the HP world.

HP needs to get their own genius group to FIX IT.

Re: CD/DVD drive not recognized in hp pavilion dv6500

Thanks for the information.

I think there will be some time before there is a solution. I've just bought an extrem drive.

Re: CD/DVD drive not recognized in hp pavilion dv6500

This Magicdisc solution, so far is partially successful.

There is so much that is automatically being installed, as a possible requirement for the free version, that only after two restarts is it possible to test the results. However, I can SEE the DVR drive in explorer.

It asks for a dvd drive, but so far nthing installed is usable or readable.

In checking driver status, it seems that every test software that I have indicates the driver is the latest and best version.

I will spend more time now that the drive is actually visible in VISTA. I will let you know how it evolves.

The earlier suggestion concerning testing the cable for completely being plugged into the motherboard is virtually impossible to consider for most users (including me). Too many screws and they are different sizes and appearance as you start the process.

Thank you (and other) for continuing this effort to resolve this grievous HP manufacturing and distribution defect.

Re: CD/DVD drive not recognized in hp pavilion dv6500

I have had the same problem on a dv2700 and have tried numerous "solutions."  Somewhere along the way I became convinced that it was a software problem....thus trying many things to solve this as a software problem.  Recently, however, I became convinced that it was a hardware problem....tried pushing hard on the drive back into the case....VOILA....the drive is back again.  Laptop sees it upon boot up.  If computer is already booted up...push hard on the drive....then go to Device Manager, right click on the top of the list, click on search for new hardware and maybe the drive will show up there.  Certainly worth a try...cheap and easy.  The connection of the drive must be really poor.  Just my two cents...hope it works for you.

Re: CD/DVD drive not recognized in hp pavilion dv6500

Make sure it is not simply a connection problem before going through a lot of other time-wasting gyrations.  Push HARD on the drive back into the case....either restart the computer or go to Device Manager and search for new hardware.  This works for me now, I can always bring back the CD/DVD drive this way.  The connection inside the case must be VERY poor.

[ Edited ]

Unfortunately, this solution did not work. Evidently these steps were part of a previous procedure.

Thank you for taking the time to make this suggestion.

I really appreciate the experience of those that offered solutions or suggestions.

However, none have actually worked for me.

The extensive reported and certainly recognized defect in this high-end HP notebook, should stimulate HP to officially and finally recognize the validity of the problem. They have the resources to analyse and provide a solution that can be shared. There have already been too many man-hours of frustrated testing of a paid-for defective product.

HP should fix it or recall it.

Re: CD/DVD drive not recognized in hp pavilion dv6500

I found the true solution.

Like everyone else, I had intermittent use of my disc drive.  First, it would be recognized in BIOS, but

not in Windows.  Then, it wouldn't be recoginized in BIOS at all.   I shut the laptop down, removed all

peripherals.  Removed the battery.  Then I removed the DVD drive.  There is a single screw that holds

it in place on the bottom of the laptop.  There should be an indentation that looks like a CDROM over

the screw.

I then noticed dust bunnies on the DVD drive's connector, so I took a can of compressed air and

cleaned the drive, then used the air on the opening the DVD drive connects into.  Dust bunnies

galore.  After I cleaned them, and replaced the drive, everything works like new.

Hope this helps!

Re: CD/DVD drive not recognized in hp pavilion dv6500

I had the same problem with my dvd not showing up. was in bios. using windows 7.  I found that it looks like some burning software  messes with the drivers . I got my drive back by uninstalling the drive in device manager and then following the instructions at:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/sonic-solutions-pxhlpa64sys-driv...

be forewarned you will be using regedit to modify the registry files. but like i said it worked for me   Let me know
