Computer does not recognize CD/DVD drive

If all of the other suggested sites and links fail like they did for me try this.

It is a windows 7 issue not a hardware or HP issue like some would think. Download this .iso file from mircosoft.com

after you download the file open it with either roxio, deamontools lite or some other program that can make and run an image drive. if you do not know how to make an image drive look up "how to create an image drive" in google. I suggest using deamontools lite, it is free.

After that is done, open the downloaded file and check all. The file will then install an entire driver suite for windows 7.

restart you computer.

Then go to you "device manager" by going to the start menu and right clicking on the "my computer", then click manage. The find the cd/disk drives and expand it, note you should see the image drive that you created. Highlight the image drive and right click, click "scan for new hardware". In a second or two you will see your drive again.

Same problem.  I can see my CD/DVD device in the system BIOS boot order, which is good.  There is power to the hardware (I can open it by pressing the button, I get the flashing green light, and it spins for a minute then stops).  I have checked the device manager and there is nothing showing for the hardware.  I have ran through all of the troubleshooting tips that Microsoft has offered and they can't help me.  ARRRRRHG!  So frustrating to see all these customers with similar issues and I bet no technician will respond to any of us.  We just talk to each other hoping for a light at the end of the tunnel.  I wonder if the "Big Wigs" at HP periodically check these message boards and chuckle, "Ha, we got another one!"

I have gone round and round trying to get my HP Pavillion dv6700 to recognise my cd/dvd drive. It all started when I upgraded from Vista to Win7. Oh how I miss XP!

I can see the cd/dvd drive but when I try to use it I am asked to insert disc in drive. When I do this it  won't read the disc.

I am very disappointed with HP for letting this issue go on so long.  They could fix it if they wanted to, but allow it to destroy the lives of their faithful customers. 

I have updated my computer with every known update, installed all known fixes they have listed on the web page, replaced the drive, replaced the hard drive, replaced the software, not recovery disks, because it will not read the

cd's, but still no cd/dvd rom drive.  Also, I have called HP support, to no avail, and was told to go buy another laptop.

If this issue is not fixed rather soon, I will abandon any plans to purchase another HP machine, of any kind, now and in the future.

That's great if you have windows 7.  I have windows vista home .  Do you have anything on that?

Well I don't seem to get any help here,  I just bought a new laptop and don't want to lose all my photos in my

 PC, also  can't afford to print them all, the price of colored ink and all.  I am just getting pretty depressed about it. 

I guess I am happy about buying my new Toshiba laptop, hopefully it won't  have the same problems.  Baja2

Why don't you understand that we do not have a DVD for burning capabilities.  How can you run this software without one.
