Hello candasm, CD\DVD drives have a laser for the CD and another laser for the DVD.

Many times the DVD laser fails and that causes the DVD writer and Player to stop writing and reading DVD disks.

Hello candasm, I have removed the CD\DVD drive from the system, and removed the housing from the CD\DVD and cleaned the lasers in the CD\DVD drive.

Sometimes this will result in these drives working again, since they\ lasers can become dirty.

When this does not resolve the issue, you would need to replace the CD\DVD drive with a new one.

These drives can be purchased in the United States for less than $25.00 USD and are extremely easy to change.

Hello candasm, That is great news. I have cleaned many CD\DVD drives in this manner, and they worked for years.

I don't recall any of them to have stopped working as yet.

I have had similar problems as some in this thread---it can read a CD, but not DVDs. After inserting a DVD, Windows Explorer will not show anything in the DVD drive, but will then give me a small window that tells me to insert a blank DVD, and ejects the DVD.

How exactly do you clean a DVD drive? I've never done this before but would like to try to save myself 25 bucks.

Hello paulri, Cleaning the laser lens inside a CD\DVD drive is not hard to do at all.

Just disconnect the power cord from the tower, remove the side panel, and the cables to the CD\DVD drive and remove the CD\DVD drive. The drive may be screw mounted or lever mounted.

After you get the CD\DVD drive removed from the case, you may have to remove the front plastic bezel.

To do this, there should be a tiny hole if the front of the CD\DVD drive where you can insert a straightened paper clip and press toward the rear of the CD\DVD. This should release the drive caddy, and it should pop out just as it would if you pressed the open tab on the front of the CD\DVD drive.

When the caddy opens, you should be able to remove the front of the caddy, by accessing the very small clips that latch the caddy from to the caddy. It may just slide up and out. Now you can look at the bezel and see some small holes in the front bezel with some clips from the CD\DVD housing inserted in these small holes.

Just apply a slight pressure to disengage the latches and the front bezel should disengage.

Then remove the 4 small screws holding the CD\DVD case from the inside of the CD\DVD drive.

You should now be able to see the laser in the center of the drive. I use a cotton swab and some alcohol on the tip of the cottom swab, and lightly clean the laser lens. This only takes a few seconds, and I repeat the process a few times.

Then just reassemble the CD\DVD drive in the reverse order of the way you disassembled it. Reinstall it in the case, connect the cables, reinstall the side, connect the power cord, and see if your efforts proved successful.

Re: DVD/RW drive not reading DVDs

i have an hp pavilion dv4 with vista home premium 32 bit, with a LightScribe DVD/RW SuperMulti drive.  I am able to read/burn audio CD's (both commercial and CD-R/RW).  But, I have tried 4 different DVD movie discs, and every time, the drive spins and tries to read, but then nothing happens, and when I try to go to Start/Computer/DVD drive and "Explore" or "Open", the drive tray ejects and a window pops up saying "Please insert a disc".  So, it seems that the DVD/RW drive is simply not able to read DVD movie discs.  Any idea if this is a driver problem, or do I need to replace the DVD/RW drive?

Re: DVD/RW drive not reading DVDs

[ Edited ]

Ok I just ran into this problem myself. January I did a clean destructive install on my HP desktop after many years of a horrible SP3 attempt. Proceeded to reinstall all my programs, added my backed up files, windows updates, and finally all spyware and anti spy stuff. I was going to follow one of the attempts that another user used which had been successful where they uninstalled the drivers of their drive and reinstalled them. While simple I just couldn't shake the feeling that I had not attempted the full range of troubleshooting my drive.

The problem I was having was that it was not playing my move which was The Matrix. The first one of the trilogy it had been a while since I watched a move on my computer.

However I burned an audio disk just a few days before. I used DVD’s to add my Adobe CS3 Production Premium, so that always played back in my head, the drive should still work.

I popped in The Matrix again to make sure it wasn’t event specific, no good

I threw in an audio CD into the drive, it played so it reads those ok, next.

I threw in James Cameron Avatar Movie just to make sure it wasn’t the disk (even though The Matrix played in a dedicated DVD player) again no good.

I threw in an instillation DVD disk for one of my Adobe suites just to make sure that there were no hardware or software changes. I was surprised when it not only it read the disk it even auto played the menu for it.

Knowing that it can recognize a DVD in most its forms I determined it was just not playing movies. Which I began to ponder what could conflict with that. Well my rig has a virtual drive program called PowerISO (which I use to back up images of my computer and is really quite effective) and its normally always on and typically in the past I have never had any conflicts in software. So I disabled the program and threw James Cameron Avatar Movie into the drive and not only recognized the movie it popped up that menu where it asks you what you want to do with the move... I clicked “Play in Media Center”... and bam that was the ticket.

In conclusion:

Test all forms of disks (Audio CD's, regular CD, Installation DVD's,  and DVD movies)

Disable all Virtual drives

Enjoy your DVD drive.
