DVD Writer won't work

My buddy has a HP Pavillion a6110n Desktop.  Its has:

  • AMD Athlon 64 x2 DualCore 4400+ 2.36 GHz chip
  • 1918 MB RAM
  • Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 32 bit

It CD/DVD is a TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H653L SCSI CdRom Device.

He's having trouble using it with DVD burner or player software.

It came loaded with Roxio Creator Basic v9.  When we run it is says "No drive detected."

We found the HP support site and we updated the driver for the driver and downloaded updates for Roxio Creator, another Roxio product and a Windows DVD software product.  Nothing fixed the problem.  We've also updated his MS Vista software with no luck.  On a couple sites including MS support, we were told that we needed to remove the upper and lower filters for the drive in the Registry. We backed up the Registry and found that the lower filters were already gone, so we just removed the upper.  Still no luck.

He was able to burn DVDs and watch DVDs when he first got it but it stopped working a couple weeks ago.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Did you try Microsoft System Restore to go back to when it was working?
