Hp DVD 1270

HP should be ashamed!!  The 1270 is a hunk of junk.  Like many customers, my unit did not work from day one!!  I purchased the 1170 years ago.  It never worked !!  

I bought the 1270, which is just the 1170 with a new name slapped on it so they could unload more units to unsuspecting customers.  After losing 80$ on the 1170, I made sure and saved my receipt for the 1270 (the only reason I took a chance is because I need the lightscribe feature) so I could return the 1270.

HP support is a joke...the tech told me that it was plug and play (duh) and it should work....He told me to try another computer!! Well I did...I tried three different computers with two different operating systems and got the same message: insert disc....the stupid thing doesnt even recognize that there is a disk in the unit!!

HP SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR UNLOADING THIS CRAP ON CONSUMERS!!!!!  THIS IS JUST PLAIN ROBBERY!!!!!

I wanted to post here something on this product, but I first had to go this enormous support forum registration procedure which is even more lengthly than getting a google acocount. SIGH!!! I actually wanted to give up, but ok for the sake of consumers who may make a wrong buy. I bought the dvd1270t - in Taiwan (yes "t" it shows in device manager and K3B in Linux). I have two PC's with different hardware. One Sandy Bridge based board and one older P5B-E. I wanted to burn a DVD+R. I never ever had problems with Sony CD/DVD media on any device for many years.  so I bough DVD+R-DL from Sony. I run Ubuntu 11.10 and never had DVD/CD burn problems, ever !  The 1270t did not burn on the Q67 system, errors saying my media must be defect.I tried a 2nd disc and it burned to 80% and then provides an error. That was US$2 wasted. I tried a 3rd disc at 2.4x but the tool said the drive reported it did not support 2.4x. I almost gave up. I installed the drive to the other PC. I did not work either, same media errrors before bun even started.  I tried to switch between IDE and AHCI modes but did not make any difference. Though, to proof the 1270t was the culrprit, I used a BD drive from H+L (Hl-DT-ST BDRE  GBW-H20) and the Sony media burned fine on BOTH computers (yes, the K3B burn tool takes around 10 min to finalize the media. but it works!). I tried to boot the burned DL disc in the 1270t on BOTH machines. It sometimes did not, sometimes not. I am quite sure the 12270t is defect. On the H+L booting went flawless. Enough evidence that 1270t is of poor quality. It looks like  suppliers just don't have good qualification test procedures nowadays and just sell crap hoping no one burned a DL (CD and DVD went fine on the 1270t BTW).. HP, please go take a look and audit the supplier of your product ?

I bought a HP 1270t internal sata drive, and have had no problems with it at all so far. I've burned about 50 cd's, 20 dvd's, and 10 dl dvd's, all without any coasters (failed discs) being made. If you're having problems, have you tried different cables? The sata cable that came with the drive was defective, but I had another new one sitting around, used it instead, and no problems what so ever. I use Memorex media, and the latest version of imgburn.

Hey, I believe the HP DVD1270d is actually an iHAS224A.  If you take the drive out and look at the label, it should say something along the lines of Model: dvd1270i-something.  Mine says dvd1270i-H01 a.   I think the H01 means iHAS and the 'a' means revision A of the iHAS drive.  You can verify if it's an A or B by looking inside at the chipset.  The A has a MT1879LE chipset.  The B has a MT1839LN chipset.  The iHAS drives have become quite popular recently in the XBox 360 scene because certain ones can be flashed with a modified firmware.  I believe the A series as of this writting cannot be flashed with the special firmware, however, it can still be flashed with the iHAS firmware.   Also, I don't think there's any difference between the iHAS224, iHAS424 and the iHAS624.  The 424 and 624 firmwares just enable certain features of the drive that are disabled in the previous versions.  Therefore, if you have an iHAS224, you can flash the iHAS624 firmware on it to get added features.  Do some research before you do all of this though.  Peace.

With over 17000 views of this forum I suppose many people who have an HP DVD 1270 have come here for one reason or another. But this forum appears to be all that's left of the 1270 on HP's site, but you can still buy a 1270 from retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, TigerDirect, etc. So who's sourcing them and supporting them? I have one and would like to download latest drivers and software, but I can't find it anywhere I've on the internet so far. I think I will get my son a 1270 from a local retailer today and see what's in the box. At the moment the 1270 is available on Amazon via Lite-on but their webpage has no info on the 1270. At least when I had an LG it periodically updated it's own firmware automatically - a product with some future unlike the apparently dead HP DVD 1270.

Spork_Schivago, you're correct. Generally speaking the suffix letters "I" and "e" refer to an internal or external drive; however, there are other letters that have shown up in various diagnostic utilities that I've used. The most common references to the one in my machine are "r" and "t", even though it says "1270i" on the box. I don't know why the different chipsets unless one is for the SATA version and the other for the IDE version.

As for all the dissatisfaction over burning DVDs and CDs, I have the SATA version "24x multiformat version, and it has worked very well for me, even though I'm running it through a PCI SATA card on an old but reliable machine (2.53GHz single core P4 CPU with 2 GB RAM). I have burned DVDs, both data and movies; and I've burned countless data and music CDs without a hitch. No matter what drive you use, it is primarily only as good or bad as the software you use to burn the discs. I use Nero 7 Ultra, which chooses the app that's right for the job at hand. For most CDs, I use NTI CD Maker Pro. Both programs are a couple of versions behind the current version; but if it ain't broke, don't fix it, I say. As long as they serve my needs well, I will continue to use them. For most data DVDs, I use Sonic RecordNow Deluxe. Each of these three programs are excellent for what they are intended to do. Nero is outstanding for writing video DVDs, NTI does the best job on music and data CDs; and Sonic RecordNow does the best job for data DVDs.

With any software, though, it's best to check and tweak the settings to suit yourself BEFORE you burn your first disc.

I have tried the various free versions of CD and DVD burning software, and they all leave something to be desired, usually in performance. Nine times out of ten it isn't the disc drive that's at fault, it's either iffy software or pilot error. You get what you pay for. Believe me, I've been doing this since the old DOS days.

On another note, though, HP has always been rather arrogant and self-serving. They don't have the customer in mind or many of their early printer models would not now be obsolete and without support or updated drivers--and the products that they produce would be of better quality. They're still stuck in that old "make everything disposable" mode of thinking. I have news for HP: people are sick and tired of that attitude. They want quality again, like we had in the "good ol' days", when the quality of a person's or company's workmanship meant something. it was and remains a very telling character trait.

If HP doesn't change its attitude toward the customer and customer care and satisfaction, it will very soon fall by the wayside and will be abandoned in favor of a company that does value the customer's satisfaction. They're so arrogant, though, that I doubt that anyone in the upper echelon will listen to such warnings--until it's all falling down around their ears.

i also have the 1270d dvd rom drive and i'm runnig nero 9.0 on a windows 7 64 bit home premium and i don't have any issues.  try downloading nero 7.0 and see if that's the issue, more ofter than not, the cd/dvd burning in windows doesn't work as well as say nero, dvd creator, or roxio.  if you used the windows to burn your disks, there may lie your problem.  i have used dvd-r and dvd+r with nero and i haven't had an error yet.

as a side note, the cd / dvd may need formatting on some disks.

I also have the "finalizing forever" problem. I've left it running overnight, spinning its heart out, and even a reboot didn't stop it.

I had to manually eject the disk to get it to stop.
