I'm having the same problem.  Way to go HP.  And Sony of course, for making a format that requires updates to players.

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

Hi,

It seems that your PC has old version of MediaSmart installed, and it does not get updated from Cyberlink (Who created PowerDVD too).

You do not have to purchase Cyberlink to fix this issue.

Please follow the steps given below to get it resolved.

Click Start->Control Panel->PRograms and Features. Select MediaSmart DVD and click Uninstall. Uninstall PowerDVD too.

Install MediaSmart New Version:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49001-49500/sp49489.exe

Check if every Blu-ray Disc works fine with MediaSmart DVD, if it does not work, please try newest Version released .

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50501-51000/sp50778.exe

Thank You.

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

I had same problem and tried to repair the problem by updating all BIOS, drivers and HP Media Smart software. Nothing worked. I then installed the CyberLink Blue-Ray Disk Suite and all problems went away. My conclusion is that the HP Media Smart Software is sadly out of date and needs to be updated by HP. The HP Corporation should not include software such as this, which is obviously sub-contracted to CyberLInk, if it is not willing to consistently support and update it. Computers are supposed to improve productivity rather than reduce it.

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

Did you try?

Install MediaSmart New Version:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49001-49500/sp49489.exe

 Or

 ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50501-51000/sp50778.exe

Or

For Windows 7 64 Bit only:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50501-51000/sp50935.exe

Thank You.

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

I installed the 64 bit version. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I get "Software may not have installed correctly" and I click on "Install with recommended settings".

Should I see, in my program list, a sub-menu under HP Media Smart for "HP Media Smart DVD"? I see none.

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

Just wanted to say thanks to KiranTalluri, that fixed my problem!

I'm running Vista Home Premium 64-bit, I followed his instructions and uninstalled cyberlink dvd and mediasmart and installed the sp49489.exe file he posted the link to.

You would think the "check for updates" would download the latest version but guess not!

Thanks again!  Now I can watch Inception (again)

I followed the instructions to install the Windows 7 64 bit version. I do not see a "SMART DVD" option. Should I not be seeing this option?

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

[ Edited ]

I tried with everything you have put into the forum and nothing works for me. The program keeps asking me to choose between upgrading or not, then do nothing.

I have these 5 files :

HP-CNB.v4215_2007Medi_HTS091023-02_Normal

sp40839

sp44642

sp49489

sp50935

Besides when I try to play the HP Media Smart DVD from the HP Media Smart Smart Menu does absolutely nothing.
