Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

Hello Kiran Talli, I used your first option to rectify my problem. It did not involve Blue Ray discs but normal pre recorded discs  would not play .Windows media player advised install updated driver for video card and WMC thought the player was being used with another application or the video resolution needed to be lowered or the display connection type may not support playback of the dvd .        Pure Genius Thank you Peter Bramhall

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

Kiran,

I've tried everything you've mentioned. I've uninstalled mediasmart dvd, rebooted, and then tried to apply the sp49489.exe update. Once done, I rebooted. When hp mediasmart dvd comes up, it still wants to check for updates and will not allow me to apply the update. It says there is a failure with the install of the data1.cab file. I am running windows 7 64 bit on a HPE 210F

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

This worked for me! I have window's 7 (64 bit), HP Pavilion Elite (HPE)-210y.  I tried that first link as instructed(sp49489.exe). Downloaded it, created a restore point (just in case), uninstalled the old HP MediaSmart DVD (didn't have or see Power DVD to uninstall so skipped that). Rebooted. Installed the sp49489.exe file (ran as administrator just to make sure). Loaded in a Blue Ray DVD and it started right up. Before I kept getting the "yes/no" window to check for updates, yet it wouldn't download any updates, just keep showing that stupid "yes/no" window. This fixed it. Thank you very much! :smileyhappy:

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

By the way, have patience with the installation as there is no progress bar to tell you when it's through. If you wait long enough the warning window (to not close it without the installation finishing) WILL actually close on its own. So wait for that and you'll know it installed correctly. I got impatient once and cancelled it, thinking it was done. Don't cancel. Just have patience and wait (took about 2 to 3 minutes).

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

Thanks Luton Finkle.  I finally could play all my Blu Ray discs after following your way to uninstall and install sp49489.   I had the same problem with the Media Smart DVD.  Though I had asked for assistance from the HP Helpdesk, the different solutions they provided didn't work.  It's been months that I had tried and tried but in vain.

After installing sp49489,without the need to reboot my machine, I can now play the blueray that I couldn't play before.  Thanks a lot.

By the way, I am very disappointed with HP.  As a renowned corporation, they shouldn't provide a tool that actually doesn't work.  It's really a waste of customers' time to find the solution which is supposed to be provided by HP.

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

I tried the PowerDVD 10 download as well and I think that it screwed up my MediaSmart.

My Control Panel does not show PowerDVD but it does show a Suite..should I un-instrall all Cyberlink Software Suite. alomg with MediaSmart and then install SP9489.

I also have a problem that the Advisor Health Check just shows Download Updates Over and Over

 Thanks,

  Bud B

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

I have been having the same problem, the infinite loop of asking for updates, wont play movie. It worked at first, then one day i tried to play "how to train your dragon" and it did the whole "would you like to check for updates" i said yes, it looked like it was gonna check....nope...took me right back to asking if i wanna check for updates, i click "no" it does the same thing. looked online for fixes, couldnt find any so i resigned myself to watching them through my PS3.

...Fast foward a few months ago, i decided to factory restore my computer, afterwards it worked again(was very happy)...

...for about a week. Tried to watch Sucker Punch. .....SAME **bleep** THING! Now my comp will not play blurays -AGAIN! Is there a solution to this that does not require me to buy another program? Or do i have to restore to factory settings everytime?

Re: Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

Just wanted to chime in with the success I  had, and see what you guys think.  The short version is that "HP Touchsmart DVD" is now installed, and seems to work great, though I  don't have a Touchsmart.  I  have the HPE-180t desktop.

For quite some time, I've had the same problems described in this thread -- disk won't play, prompted to update, still some problems, etc.

Well, last night I  was having major trouble because it gave me that Cyberlink screen but the Cyberlink site couldn't find an update.  So I checked the "Update" tab under settings in MediaSmart.  And all it said was "Update" so I  clicked it.

During the process, it asked me for permission to uninstall MediaSmart ( I  said yes), then it installed Touchsmart DVD.  It still integrates with the HP MediaSmart bar, and looks almost exactly the same.  The only difference I  can tell is that the "waiting" symbol is now like a burning ring of fire (instead of this other thing with blocks back and forth).

The disk played fine.  I even pulled out another disk that I  had trouble with (the PIP commentary for Stand By Me 25th anniversary).

Seems weird, but okay.  Do you think I  should be concerned that it says "Touchsmart?"  Or do you think the support group decided that this version is getting better updates and that the decision was made to surgically remove the old program?
