I have a Pavillion a1710n. When I place a disc from my Sony Handycam into the DVD drive, J, my computer does not recognize that there is a disc in the tray. My video camera does not have any ports for me to hook up an USB cable to download the videos that way. I think the problem has to do with the Handycam disc being so small.
Is there a trick to getting the computer to register the disc or is there an adapter that I need?
Thanks for the help!!

Beth,
Is the CD/DVD drive in your PC "dished" to handle a smaller physical disk?
What model Sony Handycam are you using?
What happens when you insert the disk?
When the disk is inserted, open MY Computer. Do you see the CD/DVD drive with media in it?

If by "dish" you mean the tray has a smaller circle to fit the mini disc? Yes it does. There is the larger indentation for the CD's and DVD's and the smaller indentation for mini discs.
The video camera is a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD105. There was nothing in the manual that was remotely helpful for getting the computer to read the disc.
When I tried to open the disc by going through My Computer, it kept asking me to insert a disc into the J drive. The disc was already in there, opening and closing did not prompt recognition of the disc. I am only slightly computer literate, so I am at the end of my knowledge with this.

I downloaded the program it still didn't work. I get the pop up box that instructs me to insert a disc into the Removable Disc drive (J).

Did you use Imgburn to look for a drive firmware update?
If you have access to another PC then try the disk in another PC and see if it can be read.

The Imgburn link took me to a download called FoxTab3. Is that the same thing?
I just put in an audio cd to Rip it to my Library. Turns out the computer is recognizing that either.

I had already tried that too. The computer just does not seem to recognize that there is even a disc.
I was looking at some of the other threads and one said something about IDE something or other and uninstalling devices? It was on a different model than mine though.
Anyway, I was looking at the Device Manager and what was listed directly below the DVD/CD Rom drive and this is the device listed:
HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H20L ATA Device
does this help at all or just add to the confusion.
The advice on the other thread was to uninstall the device and restart the computer and let Windows reinstall the device.
I am running the Service Pack 2...
