I had already run Mr. Fixit, but I had another page covering the little window that told me to restart my computer. After I restarted, my CD driver was able to read a CD! All is well now.

Thanks I went to this post. Seems to be working okay now. I had a code 39 on the cd rom didn't go back to see if it was still there. Put a cd in drive works fine. Leaving it alone after using fix it with windows on the I chose the one with the filters for vista and win 7 . One thing was I did a inplace upgrade to repair some window probs. Popped cd in came up with win media play 11, works better then 10. Also which security software has everybody been running?? I have norton 360 4.1; I had trouble with usb drives on it as well earlier . Just curious.

I just burned some file to disc. Try to burn another disc, and my drive didn't read the disc., as a matter of fact, now my drive won't read any discs at all. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling through device manager, unsuccessful. Any other ideas.

Around christmastime last year, i bought myself an HP IQ525UK, & paid an extra £22 for the upgrade to windows 7. Everything works great, except for one thing - when i put a bluray disc into the drive, nothing happens. The drive spins for a few seconds, then stops. When i open My Computer, i can see the drive, but it is showing BD-OM Drive (E
, rather than the name of the movie that is inserted. Choosing propetries on the drive shows the following:
Type: CD Drive
File system: unknown
Used space: 0 bytes 0 bytes
Free space: 0 bytes 0 bytes
Capacity: 0 bytes 0 bytes
& the 'pie-chart' diagram shows all blue.
I'm not sure if the bluray was working before i upgraded to 7, as i didn't have the bluray movie at that time.
Any suggestions you could offer would be greatly appreciated, as i really want to watch this movie.
Cheers,
Hank

My husband and his two daughters have HP laptops (3 laptops!!) and all three have had the same problems as stated by others here. we have had live chats with HP techs and they have done everything listed on this site. we have also went out and bought a new optical drive. It worked until we turned off the laptop and then it was gone. HP really needs to get this fixed!!!!!
We are soooo fed up!!
The only thing they tell us now is that we are out of warranty and that maybe it is a software problem.....someone at HP should get this fixed!!!

Sorry for reviving an old post, but the other night I realized I had no more dvd drive in my explorer or my device manager on my HP Pavilion laptop. I went through all the usual "fixes", the limits removal, which weren't there, tried installing the GEAR drivers in case iTunes had hosed something up there, but nothing worked. The bios recognizes the DVD drive, in fact, as a symptom, I'm able to open the DVD door while the bios is loading, but as soon as Windows Vista starts loading, the DVD drive no longer responds to the button. As a last resort, I booted with boot logging on and noticed Vista is NOT loading cdrom.sys. It does exist and the sfc /scannow does not report any problems. As an added bonus, an optical drive is not an option in the device manager to add.
Any advice on how to get windows to load that driver is appreciated.
Terry

Others have tried to install Windows 7 thinking that would fix the problem but that does not work. But I did try something else which worked for me..Please read below. Hopefully this will help you also..
Hello I have been fussing and fighting with this isiue for weeks on top of weeks... At one point i uninstalled the Itunes product and it did help after reading other blogs to go into the registry(which i dont advise to everyone) and removed the upper and lowercase lines as suggested. This only worked for a little while. I ran the Device Manager also which did work at times but there was apparently still an issue with the driver for the CD/DVD drive. Which finally stopped working and would not reappear no matter what i did.
From all that i gathered there is still a compatibilly issues with Vista and some of the software record tools available. I then stumbled upon a blog in HP where a user downloaded the software MagicISO and MagicDisc and the CD/DVD drive reappeared. I currently didnt have any additional funds to buy more equipment or software so i download those two programs in the order listed and i did place them installed on one of my eternal drives and to my surprise and relief my "E" drive reappeared. I am using Vista OS on an HP Pavilion 6815(6700 series) Entertainment PC (Notebook PC).
