Wow, I have the EXACT same problem as terpy (9-3-2010). The drive opens when the BIOS is loading, but once Vista starts loading up, the button on the drive does NOTHING; interestingly enough, when I MANUALLY open the drive, the green "read/write" light turns on (and stays lit) and a red light on the inside (not the laser, but some other red little light) turns on... and they STAY on. Even after closing the drive.
Now, I haven't tried checking the cdrom.sys file, but I HAVE uninstalled iTunes and every single burning program that I have on here... and no joy. The Microsoft Fixit does nothing for me (it tells me the values have already been repaired). I've tried the MagicDisc/MagicISO "fix," but all that does is give me a VIRTUAL drive, not actually recognizing the real drive.
I've also tried booting into Safe Mode, and still no recognition of the drive.
So there's at least TWO people on here with this problem. I have a dv9000... well, dv9910us to be exact. I'm going to try downloading the latest LightScribe software, but doubt that will do much for me. We shall see.
Any other ideas? How about the guy who started this whole topic?

I have a hp BDDVDRW CH20L SCSI CdRom Device. I constantly have problems where the BIOS will freeze up upon attempting to detect this drive. I have tried everything. The storage controller will freeze. I tried to boot linux from a flash drive just to see if there were errors regarding this drive, and sure enough, soft reset errors repeatedly until the OS gives up and disables the sata port the drive is connected to. This drive needs a serious firmware update to correct this issue. I snooped through some HP support files regarding their optical drives and this seems to be a common problem with HP's newer bd/dvd drives, but some of them have firmware updates to fix the issue. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE RELEASE AN UPDATE TO THE FIRMWARE FOR THE DEVICE LISTED ABOVE!!!
Don't believe this is a problem? Just do a Google search for CH20L - Linux and you will see article upon article, all having to do with this same issue. Most of the time the drive works in Windows 7, but it does fail also. Not as much as it does in Linux, but it does fail.

currency101,
Did you try all the tips under this post?
Try a laptop reset. Unplug the laptop, remove the battery and hold down the power button for 30-60 seconds. Replace the battery, power cord and power up. If that doesn't work then try the next suggestion.
Boot into the bios (setup) and see if the bios recognizes the CD/DVD drive. If not, then you have a hardware issue.

leecarrie17,
Use the HP Recovery Manager to re-install the needed Cyberlink applications. Once that is done then try doing a Cyberlink update.

I have the same problem with model dv9820.
I tried the device manager, looking in the BIOS and the Microsoft auto-fix, nothing worked.
I installed a new DVD drive and tried all the solutions again, still nothing.
I downloaded the latest BIOS update from HP and still nothing.
I tried the registry solution and still nothing.
HP has no solution?
