My cd/dvd rom does not work. The driver is HL-DT-ST DVD RRW GSA-H30L SCSI Cd Rom Device. When I click on the driver, I get the message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver maybe corrupted or missing (Code 39)."
Any suggestion as to what I can do. My computer is a Pavilion desktop a1730n with Vista 32 on it..
Also when I click on driver details it lists:
c:/windows/system 32/drivers/cdrom.sys and
c:/windows/system 32/drivers/GEARAspi WDM.sys
which the computer would not let me open these files.
Please can someone help me, I am at a loss.

Try:
Removing Upper and Lower Filters
Step 1:
Click Start > type "regedit" in the Start Search box, and then click "regedit" in the Programs list.
Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro
right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
Step 2:
Click
Start, Right click on Computer and go to Manage, then in Computer Management, click Device Manager
Click
the "+" next to DVD/CDROM Drives and Right Click and Uninstall the Driver
and check "Delete the driver software for this device" and click Uninstall
Restart and Test the Drive ...

THANK YOU VERY MUCH 1badGuard I've been looking for a solution during 1 month, and vualà....I found yours which in some very easy steps helps me and solves the problem quickly and easily! Nobody have answered this post, but I've done it because the other people who have the same problem will know that this is the solution.
My problem was the driver was corrupted and appeared a yellow exclamation icon in device administration. Just delete UpperFilter and LowerFilter from register, unistall driver, click on plug-and-play button and automatically Windows reinstall correctly the cdrom device.
Again thank you very much 1badGuard !!

Thank you for helping me get back my DVD drive. I used the method that deleted the Upper and Lower filters via the regedit feature. I really appreciate it.

Yeah all good... Wandered around aimlessly looking for a solution and found lots that were either irrelevant or simply useless. So thanks heaps for the fix.
