how to play a dvd in a dvd player connected to front panel i/o of mod. m7470n?

Help! I've looked at every manual, forum, post, suggestion and can find NOTHING that refers to why an external DVD player, connected to the front panel inputs of an HP Pavilion Media Center desktop pc model no. M7470N, is not recognized as being connected. Are the inputs there just for window (no pun intended) dressing?
