smart short self test Failed HD521-W!! What do I do??

on HP diagnostics I get;  SMART SHORT SELF TEST-FAILED HD521-W

what do I do?

Does this refer to the CD drive?

Should the drive be replaced?

Is this a Western digital product?

Which diagnostic did you run that gave you the information?

HP Diagnostics are normally quite specific as to which device an error condition is being given for.

Go into the BIOS and run the hard disk long test. If the results are fail then save your data immediately as your hard disk is warning you of imminent failure.

Is you desktop still in its warranty period?

Please identify your notebook/pc .

Look at the base/rear/side of the notebook/pc at the barcoded sticker.

Post items numbered 1 and 2 on the following example of an HP notebook's barcoded sticker. Your barcode may be slightly different but will still have the important imformation needed for us to help you.

###Do not post the serial number as it is personal information.###

Post the installed operating system version ( and whether it is 32 or 64-bit ) and whether the CPU is an AMD or Intel product

Not posting all of the information as requested will delay our responses and slow troubleshooting of the issue that led you to author a thread.

Perform the HP Support Assistant Diagnostics Hard drive  long SMART test please.  If you are doing the HP Diagnostics test you have the answer to which device the test is for right in front of you. Read what it says. I  will not guess which test you are performing. All HP Diagnostic tests specify which device they are for. I can find no information with the error code you have given. A similar valid error code is HD521-2W.

What specific version of the HP Dignostics utility are you usig. What is the exact name and version?

Which Advanced Category are you using? It looks pretty self explanatory.

Back up your hard disk data and make certain that you know where your recovery disc set is.
