Upgrading my HP Pavilion P6000 Series to play better games.

I just bought an HP computer not too long ago but the sales person didn't explain too well on the gaming side. Well basically its **bleep** for HD gaming (like The Witcher 2). I would like to be able to run games on high performance without low frame rate and lag. Here's the low down...

HP Pavilion Magnesium Gray Edition p6740f

Windows 7 Premium

AMD Phenton II 955 Quad-Core Processor

8 GB DDR3

1.5 terabyte hard drive

SuperMulti DVD Burner

ATI Radeon HD 4200

Wireless LAN 802.11b/g/n

Does it look like I need to update my ATI Radeon HD 4200 and the PSU?? If so what do you recommend. What would fit? I've taken apart and put back together a PC in school, so I'd rather do it myself then send it in. Money isn't an issue.

Re: Upgrading my HP Pavilion P6000 Series to play better games.

Hi,

The first thing to do is to go to the game manufacturer's web site and forum and find out what others are using for a video card.  From what I have seen recommended, the NVIDIA GTX 260 of the ATI 4850 appears to be the most recommended video cards.

Look at NVIDIA GTX 560 and then at a minimum a 500 watt power supply.  The Corsair CX500 power supply should work

Review the ATI and NVIDIA performance specifications. Look at the memory bandwidth specifications and the DirectX level support.

How to replace a power supply.

How to replace a video card.

Be sure to measure inside your PC and make sure that the video and power supply will fit.
