HP Pavilion HPE h9-1170t
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I would like to purchase an m.2 ssd with a pcie 2 x4 adapter, eg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104544, to use as my boot (OS) drive. I cannot tell from the BIOS or documentation for this desktop whether I can boot from PCIE. Has anyone tried this with the HPE h9-1170t? Thanks!

Hi@focusbob,

Need information about converting PCI-E SSD hard drive as a bootable device. Is that right?

Thank you for sharing the issue details. I would like to help you.

As you rightly said, the BIOS is customized by HP keeping in mind of optimal performance.

HP has not tested the m.2SSD PCIE hard drive on the PC. Hence HP doesn’t recommend doing any hardware/software changes unless its an HP recommended upgrade.

You may continue to do so at your sole discretion.

Hope this helps. Let me know for more.

Happy posting.

Unfortunately it does not help. What I was asking was whether the computer is capable of booting from pcie. I understand HP would suggest it as a supported upgrade, however, I would think whether the computer can generally boot from pcie would be known. I was also hoping another user who may have tried an m.2 with a pcie adapter could comment as to whether it worked for them.

Hello @focusbob,

Thanks for the reply.

We do not know whether the PC is capable of booting from PCIE as we have not tried doing the same. This is not a recommended boot option for an HP notebook.

You could check in BIOS whether you have the option to boot from PCIE. You can check the boot order options from here: http://hp.care/2dUfOT8

If you can find an option to boot from BIOS on your PC, then please go ahead and try the same.
