Welcome to the Forums.

Here is the memory that is supported by the motherboard:

Single channel memory architecture

  • Two 240-pin DDR2 DIMM sockets
  • Supported DIMM types:
    • PC2-4200 (533 MHz)
    • PC2-5300 (667 MHz)
    • PC2-6400 (800 MHz)
  • Non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
  • Supports 2GB DDR2 DIMMs
  • Supports up to 4 GB* on 32 bit PCs (using two 2 GB DIMMs)
    • 32 bit PCs cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.

As you can see, DDR3 memory is not supported.

i read all the info for the pc on the HP website. i saw the upgrades for cpu and the ram specs. the E8600 though has a 1333MHz FSB. that is my reasoning for the DDR3. its like the legacy chips that i cant think of, oklahoma or something like that. around same time as clarksdale. they are a family member of Clarksdale. when that chip is used ram can be changed from DDR2 to DDR3. i build pc's so i have a little knowledge, though this is a little different from my normal wheelhouse. i really wanted to run this by someone with a little more HP knowledge. thanks for answering me.

Your are welcome.  It is always best to get a second opinion before spending your money.  Sellers pay to ship their products to you, but you pay to return them.
