No.

The (Iona-GL8E) motherboard supports SATA specification 2.0 (3.0 GB/s).

Re: SATA revision 3.0 on Iona-GL8E motherboard

Hi, does that mean SATA 3 internal hard drives will not run at all or will SATA 3 (6gb/sec) run but at a slower speed of SATA 2 (3gb/sec). Thanks

Hi,

SATA III devices are backwards compatible with SATA II and will be limited to SATA II speeds.

You will not get any noticeable performance improvement by using a SATA III hard drive unless it's a hybrid model.  If you want a hard drive performance improvement then consider a SSD or RAID 0  two hard drives.

The SSD option would be my choice.  The OCZ Vertex II is an excellent choice for a SATA II SSD and it's a top performer according to CPU MAGAZINE and MAXIMUM PC MAGAZINE.

Re: SATA revision 3.0 on Iona-GL8E motherboard

OCZ SSD Family is not a good choice for fiability.

I've just added a Samsung SSD 840 Serie (500 Gb) to my HPE 430 Fr Desktop, and I'm fully satisfied with it even if the HPE 430 fr does not support the 6Gb/s standard.

I have the following results (tested with DiskMark v 1.0.0.7) :

- Avg write speed : 74.43 Mb/s

- Avg Read speed : 168.03 Mb/s
