Change the storage option to IDE emulation  and save and restart.  Go into the BIOS to see if it made a difference. You can always change it back later and it won't hurt a thing.

I tried your suggestion of changing the storage option to IDE.  When I did that, the computer would not complete startup and took me into repair mode.  I let it attempt the repair.  Then I was sent to the HP recovery screen.  At that point I canceled and powered done.  I went back to the bios and changed back to AHCI for storage option.

The drive is still not recognized in the Bios.

Try clearing the CMOS and see if you can get the bios to recognize the hard drive.

Have you tried a different motherboard sata port?

I have located the CMOS on the motherboard, but I see what looks like one jumper covering the lower 4 pins not one covering 2 upper left pins as in the link  you provided and I don't see numbers on the pins so I'm a bit apprehensive to pull the jumper off lest I have the wrong thing.  The diagram of the motherboard on that same page shows it in the opposite orientation from the way it is installed in the PC (i.e. rotated 180degrees).  So I am calling them the lower 4 pins as I see them installed. But if I look at the diagram of the motherboard they would be the upper 4 pins covered since the diagram is rotated 180degrees from what I'm looking at.

So I have a few questions now since I've never done this:

Does the fact that I see a 4 pin jumper mean nothing special & I can get the same result by moving it as indicated to the lower 4 pins?

Will I get the same result by using the reset to default or factory settings option in the BIOS?

The directions note that I have to reinstall user settings.  I assume that means I should write down all the settings in the BIOS before I do this.  Is that correct?

What are the risks of screwing this up so the computer won't run at all?

And yes, I have tried the other SATA port as well as swapped out the data cable and tried another power connector.

HI,

HP doumentation is in error again.  One source is as you describe and the other is much different.

Please post the hard drive manufacturer and drive model number.

Do you by chance see an amber LED light ner the power button?

Boot into setup and look under Device Security and make sure that all of the SATA are set to Device Available and not Device Hidden.

Hello All,

I didn't want to disappear without telling how this worked out.

I decided to unload the 'D' drive from the new computer and reinstall it in the old computer because I was having a

hard time believing this was not working because of a fault of the new computer.

I discovered the 'D' drive was fried.  It does not power up at all in the old computer now.  So sometime after I unloaded it from the old computer it fried.  I'm sure it was something I did, despite the care I took.

Additionally, I had yet another SATA drive that I have now installed into the new computer and it has configured without any problem at all.

So I wanted to thank all the contributers who made suggestions and gave their time.
