Re: BIOS doesn't recognize hard drive. Recovery disks do not start computer. How can I start p6142

Hi Larry,

Can you hear the hard drive spin up?

Does the bios recognize the CD drive?

Did you make any hardware changes?

Try this procedure:

Unplug the PC and open it up. Clean out all the dust. Carefully remove and replace all the cables going to the motherboard one at a time. Do the same for the memory dimms and the video and sound cards if you have any.  You might want to buy a can of compressed air to blow the dust out of the CPU heat sink.  Plug your PC back in and give it a go.

In addition to what Big_Dave has told you may also try to swap the SATA cable and power cable inside the comp, you may also try diff sata ports on the mobo. Please follow this link

If still the HDD is not detected then you may have to replace the HDD.

I'm not sure about the hard drive.  Will try to feel for vibration on startup.

BIOS does not recognize the CD drive.

No hardware changes other than while following hp trouble-shooting guide.

I switched the socket into which hte hard drive was connected on the motherboard.  No change.

I had already disconnected and reconnected the hard drive during troubleshooting.  No change.

I'm concerned that a new hard drive also won't start up - system is on the old one.  The computer won't boot from CD.

Hi,

Are you saying now that you already tested a new hard drive and it didn't work?

What else did you try that didn't work?

Re: BIOS doesn't recognize hard drive. Recovery disks do not start computer. How can I start p6142

I have not yet tried a new hard drive.

i'm afraid to because the BIOS does not recognize the existing hard drive or the CD/DVD drive.

I can sometimes enter setup, but not on every boot attempt.

Hi Larry,

Your first post indicates that you should contact HP.  What did HP recommend?

If the CD and hard drive is not recognized when one or the other is unplugged then you are probably down to either a weak power supply or a bad motherboard. In either case, bring your PC into a HP authorized repair shop for a better examination.

Try clearing the CMOS.  It's a long shot.  Some HP PCs that use the same motherboard do have a history of motherboard issues.

Re: BIOS doesn't recognize hard drive. Recovery disks do not start computer. How can I start p6142

I tried reseting the CMOS - no change.

I ran F9 diagnostics and observed BIOHD-2 error message when it scanned the hard drive.

The processor and memory all passed.

Although BIOS doesn't recognize the hard drive or the CD/DVD, I was able to open the CD/DVD tray and put a bootable disk in it.  I changed Setup to boot from CD, but it didn't happen.

Hard drive light came on briefly when powering the computer off - then back on, but it didn't remain on.

Re: BIOS doesn't recognize hard drive. Recovery disks do not start computer. How can I start p6142

I moved hard drive to another computer, hp a1355c, and was able to run Windows recovery.

Restore would not work.  Tried it for several different restore points.

Finally decided to recover using a system image for C drive.  That worked fine.

I verified that files were on the drive and that the C and D partitions were present, then moved the hard drive back to the original hp p6142p computer.  The p6142p computer reaches black screen sayiing "detecting storage devices" and seems to hang there.

The hard drive from the hp a1355c computer would not work in the p6142p computer that's not starting up.  It works fine in the computer from which it came when I put it back.

Looks like the hard drive in the p6142p works fine and no data has been lost.

How can I start my p6142p?
