Blu-ray multi-writer and player stops and stutters on new desktop.

New HP ENVY H8-1420t CTO desktop.  Upgraded to blu-ray multi-writer optical drive.  While playing blu-ray movies, drive runs for couple of minutes then stops, stutters and makes a mechanical noise for minute, then continues playing.  Very annoying.  Desktop is Intel i7 3.5 ghz quad cpu and came with PowerDVD blu-ray software.  HP exchanged the player/writer.  No help.  The Cyberlink software mfg tells me I need to upgrade the firmware.  BUT, I cannot determine what the optical drive model is, who made it, and therefore, how to get updated firmware!  NOTE:  Cyberlink also told me this might be a "performance" issue - how can that be with the supplied equipment package?  The graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce GT 630.  Help!

Hi,

Your PC is under warranty so contact HP Support.

HP's support number is 800-474-6836 or 800-HPINVENT or online here.

Re: Blu-ray multi-writer and player stops and stutters on new desktop.

I have contacted HP, and they had two solutions:

1.  Sent a replacement blu-ray multi-writer - did not work any better.

2.  Asked me to totally recover my original software - did not work any better.

I was hoping the community had some ideas or tests I could try to isolate the problem; I cannot believe that this computer doesn't have the power to play blu-ray movies, as it is lightening fast for everything else.  It also has an SSD primary disk drive, which makes everything even faster.

Any ideas on how to test the graphics card?  I did notice that when I ran the "Windows Experience" benchmark, the graphics were the lowest scores.

If not, I'll try HP support again.

Hi,

The NVIDIA 630 should be sufficient for Blu-Ray.  You could try the NVIDIA web site for a later driver update.

Firmware update? Try this thread for a suggestion on finding a firmware update.  HP Support should be able to help you with locating a firmware update for your HP BD player IF one is available.

Also, use the Cyberlink Blu-Ray Advisor tool to make sure that your entire system meets the Blu-Ray requirements. Check the Advanced tab and make sure that your PC meets the requirements of the BD disk material.

If you are trying to pull down additional BD content while playing a BD disk, then disable that function.

You might consider downloading a trial version of the Cyberlink's PowerDVD 12 Ultra software and give it a go. Backup your PC before installing the software.

Re: Blu-ray multi-writer and player stops and stutters on new desktop.

The problem is not with the software. It's a hardware issue. Most likely electrical. The drive may be faulty, the power connector to the drive is faulty and fails under load, or the power lead you are using has too much on it and cannot sustain power to the Blu drive. Try switching the connector out with one from another power supply lead if possible. If the PSU lead that you have the Blu-Ray drive on is faulty, then the PSU must be replaced.

BizkitsNGravy81,

That would be a very obscure power issue.  Why do I say that? Because I am running three hard drives and two optical drives (one being a HP Blu-ray) off the same PSU power tap without issues.

No, I just thought that maybe you had a red herring post.  I see a lot of them out here by certain unnamed individuals.

Re: Blu-ray multi-writer and player stops and stutters on new desktop.

Thanks for the info.  I installed the latest drivers/software from both Nvidia and Cyberlink.

I ran the Cyberlink tool you suggested and everything "passed" for both basic and advanced tests.

HOWEVER, the tool indicated that my computer has 4096 MB "system memory."  I have 16 gigs of memory, unless they are talking about a different set of memory!  I saw this same number somewhere else and wondered about it.  NOTE:  If I go to control panel/system, the 16 GB memory is shown.

Is that possibly a clue, in that some of the software is not using full memory capability?

Thanks.

Re: Blu-ray multi-writer and player stops and stutters on new desktop.

Hi,

I get the same 4096 MB reading with the tool.  I suspect that tool is not a 64 bit application so the tool probably is probably reading the max memory for a 32 bit application.
