CD DVD drive will not read or write

Hello.  I have a Pavilion 6202 and am running Windows Vista.  For the past couple of weeks, I haven`t been able to get the CD DVD to play.  I get the following error in the Device Manager: `(Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39).  Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.)  Of course, the computer checks for a solution, but nothing comes back.  the CD DVD ROM Drive is a (TSST Corp CDDVDW TS-H653N Scsi CdRom Device).

I have limited computer experience.  I tried updating the driver, but it says it is already installed.  Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks.

Re: CD DVD drive will not read or write

  Hello Laurent,

Try:

Removing Upper and Lower Filters

Step 1:

Click

Start > type "regedit" in the Start Search box, and then click "regedit" in the Programs list.

Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.

right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.

Step 2:

Click

Start, Right click on Computer and go to Manage, then in Computer Management, click Device Manager

Click

the "+" next to DVD/CDROM Drives and Right Click and Uninstall the Driver
and check "Delete the driver software for this device" and click Uninstall

Restart and Test the Drive ...

Re: CD DVD drive will not read or write

Hello CorMit.

I just finished applying your solution to my problem, and..........it works!!!!

Thank you so much.  I thought I`d have to lug this thing to the store where I bought it.  You`ve saved me a trip, and possibly some more headaches.

By the way, at the bottom of your message, it says:``

Click the "+" next to DVD/CDROM Drives and Right Click and Uninstall the Driver.    I didn`t need to ``check "Delete the driver software for this device" and click Uninstall `` because the option didn`t come up.  Don`t know why.  Anyway, it works, and that is what is important.

Thanks again!!

Laurent

Re: CD DVD drive will not read or write

Hello Folks,

Good to hear this resolved your problem, and yes the Step 2, DOES NOT need to be preformed .. just if you still get an error in device manager .. then redo it with step 2 and it will reinstall the driver properly :smileyhappy:

Re: CD DVD drive will not read or write

seun70,

If you can't find them make sure you are in the correct location ... and also they may not be there . what is it saying in device manager?

is there an error code on the disc drive?

Re: CD DVD drive will not read or write

When I try to play a music cd or a dvd in the cd rom, it doesn't come up to where it ask you to play the cd or dvd on media player.  Then I go to the computer and it shows no cd rom. I tried to do the "regedit" and went through the steps and there is no upper filter and no lower filter.  What am I doing  wrong?  Or is there another step before getting to the upper filter and the lower filter?  Please let me know.

Thank you.

Re: CD DVD drive will not read or write

[ Edited ]

Hello buttercup5500,

The Upper and Lower filters are not ALWAYS in the Registry .. if you go into the device manager and go the the CD/DVD ROM Drives .. is there any symbols on the Drive? like a Exclamation Point, red 'X' or anything .. either way just right click on it and uninstall it, restart and then see if the drive comes back .. if that does not work then try taking the Optical Drive out of the computer completely, then just reinsert it .. if still not working then possibly a bad Optical Drive .. also try updating the driver in device manager ..

Hope this helps :smileyhappy:

Re: CD DVD drive will not read or write

Failure after failure ... even replaced the drive.

Tried to install the latest driver... driver up to date.

Removed the lower filter, upper filter not in the registry.

Uninstalled driver repeatedly from device manager to no avail.
