CO5110Y BIOS won't allow changes to LAN or Video BIOS version 5.38

Hello,

I have a Compaq CQ5110Y with the version 5.38 BIOS. My problem is that I need to disable the onboard LAN chip. My current BIOS will save changes to the time and date, but it appears that it won't save changes in the ADVANCED tab. I've added a PCIe-16 video card. I've tried changing from the default PCI setting to PCIe-16 and it won't save those either. I downloaded BIOS update 5.49 and tried to install it. I get an error message stating that my computer does not meet the minimum requirements for this update. I have replaced the original CD/DVD burner, as it would no longer burn. I've also upgraded to 4GB of main memory. I can not find any of the older BIOS updates to try. No info found on HP's site regarding the history of BIOS updates and what they were designed to correct.

On every boot up, I get a message stating that the BIOS defaults were loaded due to an error or check sum issue. Was there a BIOS update to correct this issue? If so, what version is it, and where can I get it?

Chaztuna53, welcome to the forum.

You mention that you installed a PCI Express x16 video card.  When you install a discrete video card the integrated video is automatically disabled.  Also, did you check to assure that the power supply unit (PSU) has enough wattage to run the card?  The PSU is 300W.  If it is a mid-level card this may not be enough wattage for the entire system.  They normally require at least 350W to 400W to operate properly.

There is a BIOS update available for the motherboard.  If you update it be extremely cautious.  A failed BIOS update makes a good boat anchor.  Follow the instructions carefully.  There are no older versions available.

Please click "KUDOS" if I have helped you and click "Accept as Solution" if your problem is solved.

Re: CO5110Y BIOS won't allow changes to LAN or Video BIOS version 5.38

It's a low end video card. That said, I'll remove it and see what happens. That said, I've been getting the same BIOS error message as long as I've owned the computer. Since version 5.49 is to correct an issue with the OEM CD/DVD player, could the "does not meet minimum requirements" message I got when I tried to install the version 5.49 update be caused by the OEM optical drive being absent? I would think not, but I'm not an expert on BIOS.

It could be the lack of the original DVD drive.  HP tatoos their motherboards with the major components of the computer.

Removal of the aftermarket video card [Zotec 210] and re-installing the OEM memory sticks made no difference. I also tried flashing the BIOS in safe mode. Still got the same error message about the machine not meeting the minimum requirements for this update. Also noted an error code at the end of that message [9994]

This is a strange one.

Here is a guide that will explain the error code 9994.  I don't know if it will help you, but it is worth a try.

Dean,

Thanks for the link to the explanation of the 9994 error code. That means that I definitely need to re-install the OEM CD/CVD. Not sure if I've saved it or tossed it out. I may need to purchase a replacement. That was worth a Kudo.
